(Albuquerque, NM) - Waubonsee Community College's Jordan VanBarriger capped off a sensational season by setting a new standard for Chiefs' men's cross country. The sophomore from Rockford East High School finished 18th overall at the NJCAA Division I National Championship Meet on Saturday, November 9. VanBarriger traversed the 8K course set up at the University of New Mexico's North Golf Course in a time of 25:18. In the process VanBarriger achieved the highest finish ever by a Waubonsee runner, surpassing Alex Rodriguez' 19th place finish at the 1996 National Meet. He also became the first ever Chiefs' men's runner to earn All-American honors, receiving a Special Mention All-American certificate for finishing in the top-40 out of 343 competitiors. VanBarriger also established a new school record time for an 8K race, breaking his own mark of 25:22 set earlier this fall at the Aurora University Spartan Classic. Waubonsee head coach Abby Ebener and assistant coach Keith Burke also had two other runners qualify to compete at the meet, which was held at an elevation of 5,300 feet and on a sunny, 66 degree day. Brad Osuch, a sophomore from Oswego High School, placed 226th crossing the finish line in a time of 28:52. Gaby Juarez-Marrufo finished 123rd overall out of 290 runners in the women's 5K race. The sophomore from Aurora East High School turned in a time of 21:25.
