(Channahon, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's men's and women's cross country teams opened their 2022 season by running in the University of St. Francis Twilight Invite last weekend. The Chiefs' men's squad finished ninth overall as a team amongst the field of mostly four-year colleges with a score of 253, while the women's team consisted of three runners and did not qualify in the team standings. Waubonsee's Logan Cunz placed 43rd in the men's race covering the 5K course at Channahon Community Park in a time of 17:33 to lead the Chiefs' contingent. Sophomore Jacob Weissensel finished 70th, Huitzi Del Real was 76th, Owen Kroeyr came in 85th and Dominic Fiedler placed 87th. Clayton Burnette and Joshua Branstad rounded out the Chiefs' participants coming in 93rd and 94th. St. Francis' Jordan Freese beat the University of Chicago's Cy Chittenden by just a second to win the men's race in a time of 15:25. However, the Maroons won the team title with a score of just 24 with the Saints coming in second with a total of 46 points. In the women's race Waubonsee's Marina Mercado finished 60th, while Payton Heiden was 74th and America Chavez was 77th overall. The University of Chicago's women swept the top-5 spots to record a perfect score of 15 points, led by junior Lucy Groothuis who covered the 5K course in a time of 17:51. Waubonsee, guided by first-year head coach Eric Baron, is set to run again this coming Saturday, September 10 when they compete in the Aurora University Spartan Classic at the Northwestern Medicine Cross Country Course in Geneva beginning at 10:00 a.m.
