(Geneva, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's Cross Country teams competed at the Aurora University Spartan Classic held on the rugged Northwestern Medicine Cross Country Course. Coach Eric Baron's men's crew placed 18th as a team among the mostly NCAA Division III colleges on a warm and sunny Saturday morning. Logan Cunz paced Waubonsee's runners coming in 117th by traversing the 8K course in a time of 29:40. Jacob Weissensel finished 186th, Huitzi Del Real placed 214th, Dominic Fiedler was 230th and Owen Kroeyr 242nd overall. Clayton Burnett ended up 249th and Joshua Branstad was 251st to round out the Chiefs' participants. Perennial NCAA Division III national contender North Central College took the men's title with a team total of 19 to easily out run second place Loras College, which compiled a score of 46 points. Cardinals' senior Braden Nicholson won the race, crossing the finish line five seconds ahead of Zach Hird with a time of 26:00.
Waubonsee had only three women's runners participate with Marina Mercado finishing in 108th place in a time of 30:17 overall. The Chiefs' America Chavez came in 143rd and Payton Heiden was 148th out of the 158 competitors in the women's race. Loras College won the ladies' race with a perfect score of 15 led by senior Brianna Renner who covered the 5K course in a time of 23:31, edging teammate Kassie Parker to win by two seconds. Lansing (MI) Community College was a distant second with 72 points, while Millikin University placed third with 81 points.
