Chiefs take two from Kougars

(Sugar Grove, IL.) - Waubonsee Community College scored a dozen runs in each game en route to sweeping their doubleheader against Kishwaukee College. The Chiefs (14-26) took the opener 12-5 behind the pitching of Nicole Krupp and a seven-run fifth inning outburst. Waubonsee then won game two 12-9 by scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a two-run homer by Megan Arcivar. The Chiefs had a 9-2 lead in the fourth only to see the Kougars (8-28) rally to tie it in the top of the sixth.

In the opener Waubonsee grabbed a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run single to center by Ally Miller. Kishwaukee retook the lead in the top of the fifth by pushing across three runs for a 5-3 lead. The Chiefs responded in a big way by putting up seven runs on the scoreboard in their half of the inning. A bases-loaded, two-run double by Tori Isom started the scoring, and Autumn Sullivan capped it off with a three-run homer to straight away center field. Sullivan's ninth round-tripper of the season put the Chiefs ahead 10-5. Waubonsee added a couple of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth in support of Krupp who picked up her sixth pitching victory of the spring. The right-handed hurler allowed eight hits and four earned runs, while striking out two and walking just one. Meanwhile, the Chiefs took advantage of seven walks combined by a pair of Kougars' pitchers. Sullivan finished the game 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two driven in to go along with two stolen bases. Destinee Corral registered a pair of hits in the victory as Waubonsee tallied 10 hits for the game.

In game two Sullivan lead off the bottom of the first with a shot to right that was misplayed by the Kougars' right fielder, allowing her make it all the way to third. Krupp then walked and stole second base, with the throw going into center field as Sullivan crossed the plate. In the top half of the second inning Kishwaukee's Kayti Beauchamp smacked a two-run homer to dead center to put the Kougars in front 2-1. Waubonsee tied it in the bottom half of the frame as Samantha Moravek drilled a run-scoring double down the right field line. Moments later she scored on a ground out to short to put the Chiefs ahead 3-2. In the bottom of the third Arcivar and Isom each had run-scoring singles to center, and Isom came home later in the inning when Corral reached base on an error to make 6-2 Waubonsee. The Chiefs then added to their lead in the fourth scoring three more times to grab a commanding 9-2 lead. A two-run triple to the left field corner by Sullivan highlighted the inning. But the Kougars battled back as they began to move the ball more off a tiring Arcivar. Kishwaukee tallied a pair of runs in the top of the fifth without getting the ball out of the infield to pull within 9-4. The Kougars then tied the game at nine with a five-run sixth inning after an error and three straight hits with the bases loaded. Again the Chiefs responded in their half of the inning scoring three times, all with two outs. Krupp ripped a two-out double to left center and then scored on a throwing error by the Kougars' third baseman moments later. Arcivar then came up and launched a two-run shot to left center, the first home run of her collegiate career, to put Waubonsee ahead 12-9. Julia Penman then closed out the game in the circle to earn the save. Arcivar finished 2 for 4 at the plate with two runs scored and three runs batted in, while scattering 10 hits and surrendering five earned runs to get the pitching victory. Isom recorded a pair of hits as every player in the Chiefs' lineup had a hit and everyone except Corral scored at least one time.
