Waubonsee’s Eby selected to NJCAA All-American team

(Charlotte, NC.)  -- Waubonsee Community College's Alyssa Eby was named to the 2019 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Softball All-American Third Team. The Chiefs' second baseman was one of just 39 individuals out of over 2,000 Division II softball players from across the country to earn this distinction. On the season Eby batted .449 overall, ripping 84 hits including 20 doubles. The freshman from St. Charles North High School also scored 58 runs, posted a .461 on-base percentage, and was the toughest batter in the country to strike out, whiffing only once all season in 195 plate appearances.

Eby's 84 hits equaled Ashley Blocker's single-season Waubonsee record set in 2015, and placed her seventh nationally among all NJCAA Division II players in hits. The Chiefs' leadoff batter finished one double shy of Alora O'Malley-Molk's program record of two-baggers in a season also established in 2015, and tied for 17th in that category nationally. Eby was tied for 13th nationally in at bats with 187 and finished the season on a 40-game strikeout-less streak. The right-handed hitter also drilled three triples, drove in 26 runs, posted a .588 slugging percentage, and stole 10 bases in 12 attempts. Earlier this spring Eby was also chosen to the All-Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) First Team and the NJCAA's Region IV First Team for her performance on the diamond.

Waubonsee finished the season 32-18 overall under second-year head coach Kristen Corning. The Chiefs went 8-4 in ISCC play to finish second in the league standings for the second straight year. Waubonsee reached the 'final four' of the double-elimination Region IV Division II District B Tournament before suffering a heartbreaking 7-6 loss in 11 innings to McHenry County College. The Chiefs then left nine runners on base in a season-ending 6-4 loss to Illinois Valley Community College.
