Chiefs sweep Pioneers in Grand Fashion

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's softball team swept their Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) doubleheader versus Prairie State College in grand fashion on Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs won the opener 8-3 and then smacked a pair of grand slam homers on the way to shellacking the Pioneers 16-1 in game two. Waubonsee improved to 15-16 overall and evened its' ISCC record at 5-5.

Waubonsee took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game one when Hailey Ruhl lofted a two-run home run to straight away center field. Prairie State got on the board in the top of the fifth via a walk, a Chiefs' error and a groundout. The Chiefs then began to pull away by scoring four times in the bottom of the fifth inning. Breanna O'Malley-Molk ripped a two-run single to center with one out, and Taylor Wyeth followed with a triple to the right field corner to make it 5-1. Jesika Lowe then repeated that feat with a triple of her own to center field.

Prairie State loaded the bases in the top of the sixth and scored a run on a two-out single, but left three runners on when Sophie Kapica lined out to Sarah Sandusky in center field. Waubonsee added two more runs in the bottom half of the frame to get more breathing room. Leading off the inning Kayla Tranter drilled the first pitch she saw for a line drive home run to dead center field. The Chiefs plated an eighth run on a two-out, run-scoring single to right field by Jori Peters. Taylor Warren allowed only five hits over seven innings of work to pick up the win. O'Malley-Molk, Ruhl and Sandusky each finished with two hits apiece as Waubonsee tallied 11 hits total for the game.

After a run scoring single in the first inning by Wyeth, the Chiefs blew open game two with an 11-run third inning. Waubonsee loaded the bases with no outs and scored the first run on an infield single by Lowe. Janeen O'Reilly then reached base on an error to score another run. Tranter was then hit by a pitch to force in another run and give Waubonsee a 4-0 lead. Ronnie Latka reached base on another Pioneers' error, which allowed a run to score. A one-out fielder's choice plated another run and Jori Peters doubled in two runs to make it 8-0. A walk loaded the bases again and Wyeth cleared them with a grand slam homer to left field to officially turn the game into a rout.

The Chiefs added to their big lead in the fourth as Latka singled, Sandusky walked and Ruhl reached on an infield single to load the bases once more. Peters then brought everyone home as she launched a grand slam to right field for a 16-0 Waubonsee lead. The Pioneers avoided the shutout in their next at bat with a single, a double and a groundout to get on the scoreboard as the Chiefs won by 10-run slaughter rule in five innings.

Peters finished the game 3 for 6 with a double, a home run, a walk, six runs batted in and four runs scored. Wyeth ended the game 2 for 3 with a home run, two scored and five runs batted in, while Lowe registered two hits and O'Malley-Molk, Latka and Sandusky all scored twice.
