Chiefs go indoors to top Kougars

(DeKalb, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's softball team evened its overall record to 17-17 with a 5-1 win over Kishwaukee College on Friday afternoon. Due to inclement weather, the contest was played indoors at the DeKalb Park District Fieldhouse, the third time in program history that Waubonsee has played an opponent at that venue. Prior to the game Waubonsee honored its second year players and their parents on Sophomore Day.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when the Chiefs pushed across a run. Julia Gonzalez led off the inning with a line shot double to right centerfield. She moved over to third base when Kishwaukee third baseman Katie Taylor stopped Delanie Krantz' hot smash and threw her out at first. Gonzalez then came home when Jori Peters hit a chopper to shortstop for the second out of the inning.

Waubonsee's defense rose to the occasion in the top of the fourth as shortstop Taylor Wyeth leaped high to snag a line drive off the bat of Kendal Ansteth for the first out. The Kougars eventually loaded the bases with two outs. Breanna O'Malley-Molk then put an end to the threat when she slid to her left to stop a hard hit groundball headed to right field and threw out Kishwaukee's Abbie Pigott for the third out.

In the bottom half of the frame Waubonsee loaded the bases with a runner reaching base on a dropped third strike and two walks. A wild pitch scored a run and two more came in when Gonzalez ripped her second double of the contest to the same spot in right centerfield to make it 4-0. Kishwaukee got on the scoreboard in the top of the fifth as Ansteth drilled a two-out double to left centerfield to drive in Kia Logston. Waubonsee got that run back in the bottom of the fifth as Ronnie Latka smacked a two-out double to right centerfield to drive in Wyeth who had walked two batters earlier.

Jesika Lowe earned the win in the circle allowing five hits and one unearned run over seven innings of work. Gonzalez finished the day 2 for 3 with two doubles and two runs driven in to lead the offense. Waubonsee is set to close out its regular season tomorrow, Saturday, May 7 when they head to Galesburg to take on Carl Sandburg College in a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
