Joe Spitzzeri took over the Chiefs' program for the 2022 season after serving as an assistant coach for the previous 11 seasons. Known affectionately as Coach “Spitz” he has been a part of eight Chiefs’ Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference title teams and the program’s only Region IV Championship in 2017. He has also coached summer ball for several years and has helped guide seven players on to NCAA Division I colleges with numerous other players going on to Division II, Division III and NAIA schools. Spitzzeri has officially been in the dugout for over 1,000 softball games and counting in his coaching career.

For 13 seasons Spitzzeri coached softball with the Northern Illinois Thunder, helping lead the 18 & over squad to a fifth place finish nationally in 2005 and 12th in 2007 at the USSSA World Series. His teams also won the Consolation Championship at the USSSA Illinois State Championship Tournament in 2005, and took third place at the same tournament in 2007. He is a founding father of the Northern Illinois Thunder and its past Vice President for many years.  Spitzzeri also served six seasons as a Varsity Softball Assistant at Kaneland High School, helping guide the Knights to four conference (2002-2005), two regional (2002-2003) and one sectional title (2003). Spitzzeri also coached basketball at the prep level for 11 years, and travel basketball at the elementary and middle school level, leading his Kaneland Cagers’ squads to four titles and seven Final Four finishes in their west suburban leagues.

Spitzzeri graduated from Gordon Tech High School in Chicago in 1975, where he played baseball on two Catholic League championship teams. He went on to pitch in college at the University of Illinois - Chicago. Coach Spitzzeri is an avid New York Yankees fan, and recently retired from a career as a trial lawyer. Spitzzeri and his wife Caryn have four children and five grandchildren presently.
