Chiefs gradually pull away, move into tie for ISCC lead

 

(Sugar Grove, IL.) –  Waubonsee Community College's women's basketball team gradually pulled away to dispatch the College of Lake County 76-58. The victory moved the Chiefs (16-11, 9-2) into a tie with McHenry County College for first place in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) standings by virtue of the Scots loss at Prairie State College.

Waubonsee held a 22-17 lead after one quarter before taking a 40-29 lead at halftime. The Chiefs then extended their advantage to 62-45 after three quarters. Midway through the final period Waubonsee took its biggest lead at 73-47. The Chiefs connected on 10 three-point baskets and committed only four turnovers through the first three quarters of the game.

Kayla Battle paced Waubonsee's offense with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Emily Uplegger also booked 15 points, nailing four three-pointers along the way. Lauren Goff, in her first action after missing two weeks with an ankle injury, netted 13 points and snagged nine rebounds. Hayley Farren chipped in with 11 points and six assists, while Mozelle Kempiak hauled down 13 boards, tallied eight points and dished out five assists. Deja Mayes led Lake County with 19 points, and Maxzine Knox added 18 points in a losing effort. The Lancers' Hannah Raupach, the leading rebounder in the country among NJCAA Division II players, finished with 18 rebounds and handed out seven assists, made three steals and blocked four shots.

Waubonsee's next game is this Saturday, February 17, when travel to Prairie State College in Chicago Heights. The Chiefs return home to Erickson Hall next Tuesday when they play Moraine Valley Community College in their regular season home finale.  Coach Jim Williams' women's team is set to tipoff at 5:15 p.m. against the Cyclones, while Coach Dave Heiss' men's team is set to square off at 7:15 p.m. (CDT).
