Chiefs down Elgin, stay in hunt for ISCC title

 

(Sugar Grove, IL.) –  Waubonsee Community College's women's basketball team gradually pulled away en route to a 79-55 win over visiting Elgin Community College. The victory keeps the Chiefs (14-10, 7-2) on the heels of McHenry County College (8-1) for the top spot in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) standings with five league games remaining.

Waubonsee grabbed a 19-12 lead after one quarter of play, highlighted by a pair of three-pointers by Emily Uplegger. The Chiefs extended their lead to 10-points midway through the second quarter and went to the locker room with a 31-21 advantage. Elgin's Rachel Dumoulin, ranked third nationally among all NJCAA Division III players in scoring at 26.7 points-per-game coming into the contest, picked up her third personal foul late in the half. Waubonsee then outscored the Spartans 27-15 in the third quarter to take control of the game, entering the final period with a 58-36 lead.

Kandace Jones came off the bench to spark Waubonsee's offense, posting a double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds. Uplegger finished with 12 points, making four baskets from beyond the arc to go along with handing out six assists. Kayla Battle also hauled down 14 boards as Waubonsee won the rebounding battle 56-38. Alexis VanWyhe chipped in with eight points, Mozelle Kempiak also tallied eight points and corralled seven rebounds, and Hannah Hupe contributed eight points off the bench.

Waubonsee's next game is Thursday, February 8, 2018 when travel to Prairie State College in Chicago Heights. The Chiefs return home to Erickson Hall this Saturday afternoon when they host Kankakee Community College starting at 1:00 p.m. Waubonsee is also set to play at home next Tuesday, Feb. 15, when they host the College of Lake County in ISCC action. Coach Williams' women's team tips off at 5:15 p.m. against the Lancers, while Coach Dave Heiss' men's team is set to square off at 7:15 p.m. (CDT).
