Kempiak headlines Chiefs' post-season honorees

 

Five members of Waubonsee Community College's women's basketball team were recently recognized for their outstanding play this season by the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) and the NJCAA Region IV. The trio of sophomores Mozelle Kempiak, Alexis VanWyhe and Lauren Goff were all named to the All-ISCC First Team. In addition, Kempiak was also selected to the All-Region First Team, while Van Wyhe was tabbed All-Region Second Team. Freshmen Emily Uplegger and Hayley Farren were both chosen to the All-ISCC Second Team.

Kempiak, a 6'0" center from Serena High School, set Waubonsee records for career rebounds and games with a double-double. She finished her Chiefs' career with 723 boards and registered 46 double-doubles in points and rebounds over 61 games the last two seasons. This season she averaged 13.6 points and 11.8 rebounds per contest while posting 23 double-doubles. Kempiak also averaged nearly three assists and made two steals per game, and was twice named the Region IV Player of the Week. She had a string of 30 consecutive games with 10 or more rebounds through the latter half of last season and the beginning of this one. The native of Marseilles was also chosen First Team All-ISCC and First Team All-Region last year as well.

A forward from Indian Creek High School, VanWyhe averaged 10.5 points per game and dished out 71 assists on the season. The 5'9" forward also shot 83 percent from the foul line and 44 percent from the field in conference play this season.

Goff, a sophomore from Sycamore, averaged 8.7 points, 4.7 assists and 2.6 steals per game. The Chiefs' point guard registered 127 assists and 70 steals this season to go along with making 40 three-point baskets. Goff finishes her Waubonsee career with 260 assists and 109 made three-point baskets.

Uplegger came off the bench to lead Waubonsee with 52 made three-pointers. The freshman guard from Geneva averaged 8.1 points per contest. Farren, a freshman from Yorkville, connected on 37 three-pointers during the season and handed out 51 assists as a part-time starter.

The Chiefs finished the season 18-13 overall, capturing a share of the ISCC title for the second straight year and fourth time in the last five seasons. Over those five seasons Waubonsee's women have gone a combined 59-9 in ISCC play.
