(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College erupted for 28 fourth quarter points to pull away for a 76-62 victory over visiting Sauk Valley Community College. The win evened the Chiefs' record to 4-4 overall on the season while the Skyhawks remain winless at 0-6. Waubonsee trailed 50-48 after three periods before taking over down the stretch, finishing the game on a 14-4 run.
Sauk Valley led 13-11 after one quarter before Waubonsee grabbed a 30-25 lead heading into the locker room. The Skyhawks out scored the Chiefs 25-18 in the third stanza pulling ahead by two points on a pair of free throws in the final seconds of period. Waubonsee then out scored Sauk Valley 28-12 over the final 10 minutes of play. Kayla Battle scored seven of her 12 points early in the fourth to spark the Chiefs' offense. Katie Beebe then took over from there snagging nine rebounds, blocking three shots, scoring three baskets, handing out two assists, and making a steal in the fourth quarter alone.
The Chiefs made 10 free throws in the final period to overcome a poor performance from the foul line overall. Waubonsee finished the game just 16 of 35 (46 percent) from the charity stripe. The Chiefs offset that by dominating the rebounding battle, grabbing a 61-44 advantage including 21 offensive boards. Beebe finished with a double-double, hauling down 22 rebounds and scoring 12 points to go along with five blocks, four assists and three steals. Jasmine Shepard led Waubonsee with 14 points, while Battle added a dozen points, seven boards and four assists. Meghan Menzel gave Waubonsee four players in double digits with a collegiate career high of 11 points with three assists and three steals. Hayley Farren chipped in with nine points, and Alexia Nicolai dished out five assists and tallied seven points.
The Chiefs are in action again this Thursday, November 29 when they host the College of DuPage. Tip-off is set for 5:00 p.m. (CDT) with the men's contest to follow at 7:00 p.m.
