Chiefs earn sixth win in last seven games

(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College held off Aurora University's Junior Varsity for a 66-54 victory. The Chiefs (7-4) won for the sixth time in their last seven games by forcing the Spartans into 33 turnovers which directly resulted into 25 points. Katie Beebe was a force inside once again for the Chiefs as she posted her third double-double in the last four games with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Waubonsee led just 17-15 after one quarter as five different Chiefs dented the scoring column. The score remained close throughout the second quarter with Waubonsee holding just a 29-25 lead at the break as the Spartans went scoreless the final five minutes of the half. The Chiefs gradually built their lead up to 13 points, taking a 44-31 midway through the third quarter on a short jumper by Tatyanna Smith. However, the Spartans tallied the final seven points of the period to cut the deficit to 44-37 at the end of three quarters. Waubonsee then secured the victory by starting the fourth quarter with an 11-3 run to build their advantage to 15 points midway through the final stanza. The Chiefs led by as many as 19 points (66-47) with a little over a minute left before the Spartans tallied the game's final seven points.

Besides Beebe, Waubonsee's Maddie Kawall also reached double figures with 12 points to go along with three assists, four steals and a blocked shot. Kayla Battle chipped in with nine points and corralled eight rebounds, Meghan Menzel added five assists and three steals, Jasmine Shepard contributed five steals, and Emily Uplegger handed out three assists in the win. The Spartans' Emma Ruff led all scorers with 21 points and hauled down 13 boards.   

Waubonsee is in action again this Saturday, December 8 when they travel to Champaign to battle top-25 ranked Parkland College. The Chiefs (7-4) and Cobras are set to tip off at 1:00 p.m. (CDT). Jim Williams' women's squad returns home on Tuesday, December 18 when they host Kishwaukee College beginning at 5:30 p.m. (CDT) with Dave Heiss' men's team taking on the Kougars at 7:30 p.m. Both those games can be seen 'live' on-line at www.GoChiefs.com with IBCA Hall of Famer Mark Krueger and the Chiefs' Sports Information Specialist Steve Moga calling all the action.
