Chiefs drop season opener to Triton

(Sugar Grove, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's women's basketball team opened the 2019-2020 season with a 68-55 loss to Triton College. The teams were tied at 18-all after one quarter before the visiting Trojans out scored the Chiefs 13-6 in the second period. Waubonsee battled back to tie the game at 35-all on a lay-in by Essence Rayford midway through the third quarter. Triton then broke the game open by going on an 18-4 run over the next four minutes of play. The Chiefs could get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Sophomore Katie Beebe led Waubonsee with 21 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots. The 6'0 center from Oswego High School, who only made four three-pointers all last season, connected on 3 of 4 attempts from long range in the contest. Rayford added a dozen points and two steals, while Melia Perry chipped in with 11 points and three assists. A key to the game was Triton out rebounding the Chiefs 23-11 on the offensive glass. Triton was led in scoring by Jaelah Crosby who tallied 18 points. Watersmeet, Michigan native Bethany Baldwin also booked 16 points to go along with a dozen rebounds, six assists and four steals to help lead the Trojans to the win.  

Waubonsee is in action again this Thursday, November 7 when they host Black Hawk College beginning at 5:30 p.m. (CDT)
