Chiefs set two records, tie another in romp over O-H

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College women's basketball team scored a lopsided 79-13 victory over visiting Olive-Harvey College. The Panthers, decimated due to a variety of reasons, dressed just five players and struggled mightily to score. As a result the Chiefs set two new school records and tied another on the way to improving to 7-6 overall on the season.

The 13 points allowed broke the program record of 16 points tallied by McHenry County College in a 67-16 Chiefs' win in 2014. Waubonsee's 66-point margin of victory also established a new record breaking the mark of 62 set in a 98-36 victory over Oakton Community College in 2016. Waubonsee also held the Panthers to just three points in the second half, equaling the school record set in a 40-3 first half in the aforementioned game against McHenry County five years ago.

The Chiefs tallied the first eight points of the game before the Panthers (1-12) got on the scoreboard. Waubonsee quickly extended the lead to 24-2 and ended the first period with a lopsided 30-3 lead. In the second quarter back-to-back three-pointers by Melia Perry and Riane Tomsa gave Waubonsee a 40-7 lead. The Chiefs eventually went to the break with an insurmountable 47-10 advantage.  Waubonsee then tossed a shutout in the third quarter out scoring the Panthers 19-0 to push the lead to 56 points. Olive-Harvey finally broke a 14-minute scoring drought early in the fourth quarter before the Chiefs' Tatyanna Smith completed a three-point play for a 75-12 lead. Patient on offense throughout the second half, the Chiefs ended up out scoring the Panthers 13-1 for the fourth period.

Essence Rayford led all scorers with 20 points. Perry nailed three treys on the way to scoring 17 points, including 14 in the first half. Allison Ryan contributed 12 points, connecting on a trio of shots from beyond the arc. Smith and Katy Shawke each finished with seven points. Shamari Roberson led the Panthers with seven points, connecting on a pair of three-pointers.

The Chiefs play their final game before the holiday break this coming Thursday, December 19 at Sauk Valley Community College. The women tip off at 5:30 p.m., while the men square off at 7:30 p.m. in Dixon. Coach Jim Williams' ladies then have 15 days before they play their first game of 2020. The Chiefs are set to travel to Wauwatosa, Wisconsin to take on 13th ranked Bryant & Stratton College beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Mount Mary University's court. The men's contest is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. that afternoon.
