Short-handed Chiefs drop non-conference game to MVCC

(Sugar Grove, IL) – The non-conference women's basketball match up between Waubonsee Community College and visiting Moraine Valley Community College quickly turned into a somewhat one-sided affair. Due to a variety of reasons the Chiefs (9-10) had only six players in uniform to start the game against the Cyclones (13-4), who had downed the Chiefs by 31 points just a week ago in Palos Hills. It added up to a similar outcome as Moraine Valley was in control throughout the game on the way to dispatching the Chiefs by a score of 91-67.

Moraine Valley raced out to a 31-15 lead after one quarter, pushing the tempo against the short-handed Chiefs and taking advantage of several Waubonsee turnovers. Both teams then got on track offensively in the second period, each scoring 24 points as the Cyclones held a comfortable 55-39 lead at the break. Moraine Valley then extended its lead to 24 points carrying a 75-51 lead into the final period. The Cyclones led by as many as 27 points early in the fourth as they cruised to the win, forcing the Chiefs into 26 turnovers for the game.

Essence Rayford paced Waubonsee with a game-high 31 points, while also grabbing14 rebounds and handing out five assists. Katie Beebe chipped in with 16 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Tatyanna Smith finished with eight points and six boards, while Allison Ryan grabbed eight rebounds. Kirsten Kamholz led the Cyclones with 24 points, and Marty Reeves contributed 21 points for the visitors.

Waubonsee is in action again next Tuesday, January 21 traveling north to Grayslake to take on the College of Lake County at 5:15 p.m. (CDT). Waubonsee's men are set to take on the Lancers, currently ranked in the top-25 nationally among NJCAA Division II teams, that evening at 7:15 p.m. (CDT).
