Balanced Chiefs Bounce Chaparrals

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Coming off of a huge season opening win over Rock Valley College, Waubonsee Community College women's basketball team displayed many of the same traits of success en route to trouncing the College of DuPage 95-59 on Tuesday evening. The Chiefs (2-0) again employed balanced scoring, athleticism, rebounding strength and accurate shooting from three-point range to down the Chaparrals. On Saturday in their season opener, the Chiefs upset Rock Valley 93-87 behind a balanced and relentless attack with six players reaching double figures in scoring. The Golden Eagles had entered Waubonsee's Erickson Hall Gymnasium ranked second nationally in the NJCAA's Division III Pre-Season poll.

The Chiefs offense picked up right where they left off in their previous contest. Waubonsee burst out of the gate on fire as they nailed a trio of three-point baskets to highlight a 13-2 run to start the game. The teams played evenly the remainder of the quarter as the Chiefs held a 21-10 lead going into the second quarter. Waubonsee began the second period just as it had the first, with back-to-back three-point baskets, this time by Melia Perry and Lily Fernandez. An offensive rebound and put back basket by Brooke Heiman three minutes into the quarter pushed the Chiefs' lead to 31-15. Coach Jim Williams' squad continued to out hustle the Chaparrals and carried a comfortable 45-20 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Chiefs primarily maintained that advantage throughout the third quarter. Outstanding passes by Delani Kosner and Elly Kuhn on consecutive trips down the floor directly led to Chiefs' baskets to make the score 58-34 midway through the period. A three-point play and inside basket by Jaylynn Vana in quick succession pushed the lead to 68-38 with two minutes left in the quarter. A trey by Maddie Jude in the final minute of the period then extended Waubonsee's lead to 75-42 heading into the final stanza.

Waubonsee led by as many as 44 points midway through the fourth quarter and coasted to the win. All 10 Chiefs' players that dressed scored and had at least one rebounds as well. Brooke Heiman and Fernandez each booked 18 points to lead Waubonsee in scoring. Heiman, a freshman from Indian Creek High School, also led the Chiefs in scoring in their season opener when she tallied 21 points. Vana posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards to go along with six assists and three steals. Kuhn and Perry each finished with 10 points to give Waubonsee five players in double digits. Kosner added eight assists, four steals and seven points.

The Chiefs are not scheduled to play again until Thursday, November 18 when they travel to Black Hawk College in Moline for a 5:00 p.m. contest. Waubonsee returns home to Erickson Hall on Tuesday, November 23, when they host Joliet Junior College in a 5:30 p.m. (CDT) contest.
