Chiefs rout Kougars for fourth win

(Sugar Grove, IL) –Waubonsee Community College women's basketball team improved to 4-1 overall on the season with a lopsided 75-38 victory over Kishwaukee College. Coming off of a solid road win at Milwaukee Area (WI) Technical College three days ago where they dominated the Stormers on the boards, the Chiefs picked up right where they left off. Waubonsee hauled down 16 offensive rebounds in the first half alone, leading to 16 second chance points. The Chiefs then pulled away in the second half as three players recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds, with five players scoring in double figures overall.

A back and forth first quarter ended with the Kougars (4-3) leading 15-10 on the strength of their three-point shooting, nailing three baskets from beyond the arc over the initial 10 minutes of play. A minute into the second quarter Waubonsee took the lead 16-15 on a lay-up by Melia Perry as the Kougars' hot shooting suddenly went ice cold. Over the next seven minutes the Chiefs went on a 17-0 run to grab a 27-15 lead. A 10-foot pull up jumper from the right baseline by Janiece Thomas just before the end of the period sent Waubonsee to the locker room with a 33-20 lead.

The Chiefs continued to pull away early in the third quarter with good ball movement and unselfish play. Three-point baskets by Thomas and Perry helped extend Waubonsee's lead to 45-25 as five different Chiefs scored in the opening three minutes of the second half.  A turn around basket in the lane by Jaylynn Vana and a three-pointer from the right corner by Evelyn Martin pushed the lead to 52-30 with a minute remaining in the third frame. Waubonsee carried a comfortable 56-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Thomas buried another long triple from deep in the right corner to start the final period. A moment later she registered one of her seven assists setting up Vana for an easy basket and a 61-33 Chiefs' lead. A trey from the left wing by Maddie Jude with six minutes left made it 67-35 in favor of the home team as they coasted to victory. For the game the Chiefs forced the Kougars into 28 turnovers, scoring 34 points off those miscues.

Brooke Heiman led Waubonsee in scoring with 20 points, to go along with grabbing 11 rebounds, passing out four assists and making three steals. Vana tallied 14 points and hauled down a team-leading 15 rebounds. Thomas again delivered an all around game as she scored 11 points, snagged 10 boards, recorded three steals, blocked two shots and dished out seven assists. Martin and Perry each booked 10 points, while Elly Kuhn was credited with three steals, and Delani Kosner handed out five assists and corralled eight rebounds.

Waubonsee is in action again this coming Saturday, December 4 when they host Lincoln Land Community College from Springfield. The Chiefs and Loggers are set to tipoff at Erickson Hall beginning at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
