Chiefs score record-setting win over IVCC

(Sugar Grove, IL) –Waubonsee Community College women's basketball team smashed several school records, including largest margin of victory, in trouncing Illinois Valley Community College 118-38 on Wednesday evening. Eight other program records were set and another one tied in the Chiefs' blowout win. Waubonsee (8-2) established new single-game team records for points with 118, assists with 46, field goals made with 51, field goals attempted with 100, points in a half with 68 and three-point attempts with 37. For the game Waubonsee also owned a Chiefs' record 54-0 advantage in fast break points.

Individually, freshman point guard Delani Kosner set a new program record for assists in a game with 20, eclipsing the mark of 16 by Coreisha Bailey set in 2016. Melia Perry tied the school record for three-pointers made in a game with seven, equaling the number established by Brenda Morris in 1997 and Sarah Grams in 2015. The sophomore from Oswego East High School fell just short of an eighth triple when she stepped on the three-point line while making a shot with six minutes left in the game.

The Chiefs set the tone immediately, racing out to a 17-1 lead five minutes into the game. Three treys by Perry highlighted the first quarter as Waubonsee grabbed a 24-7 lead going into the second period. Keyed by a 15-2 run, the Chiefs increased their lead throughout the second quarter. Waubonsee then went into the locker room on a high note as Janiece Thomas buried a long three-pointer at the buzzer to make it 50-18.

Despite dressing only seven players due to injuries, Waubonsee's offense was able to step up the assault in the third quarter. The Chiefs scored 36 points, just shy of the school record of 39 points in a quarter set against Oakton Community College in 2016. As a result Waubonsee carried an 86-30 lead into the final quarter. The Chiefs reached the century mark on Perry's seventh and final three-pointer with seven minutes to go in the game. Waubonsee ended the game on an 18-6 run, leading by as many as 82 points with a minute remaining.

The Chiefs' 68 second-half points bettered the mark of 65 set against Oakton in the aforementioned game from 2016. Waubonsee also made 13 three-pointers and corralled 28 offensive rebounds, equaling the number of rebounds they had on the offensive side of the floor at Milwaukee Area (WI) Technical College on November 29. The Chiefs total of 66 rebounds was the third highest single game total in the program's history.

Thomas led Waubonsee with 30 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Perry finished with 29 points, five assists, six boards and three steals. The duo's combined point total of 59 in a single game is the second highest in program history. Julianna Wadsworth scored 38 points and teammate Libby Love tallied 25 for a combined total of 63 points in a lopsided win over Oakton in 2015.

Kosner finished with a triple-double, scoring 17 points and hauling down 11 rebounds to go along with her 20 assists. The Aurora Central Catholic High School graduate also made five steals and blocked three shots. Brooke Heiman and Jaylynn Vana each booked a double-double in points and rebounds.
