(Sugar Grove, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's women's basketball team improved to 12-3 overall and 3-1 in the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) with a lopsided 88-34 win over the College of Lake County. The Chiefs broke the game open by out scoring the weary Lancers (2-11, 0-2) in fourth quarter 35-4. Waubonsee limited Lake County to just 12 second half points, and registered a 27-0 advantage in fast break points for the game. The Lancers also committed 33 turnovers which directly led to 28 Waubonsee points in the game.
The teams played a fairly even first quarter with Waubonsee grabbing a 17-10 lead after 10 minutes of play. Waubonsee gradually pulled away in the second quarter, taking a 41-22 halftime lead capped off by a basket by Evelyn Martin in the final seconds before the intermission. Coach Jim Williams' Chiefs' then came out with a much more defensive focus in the third quarter. Waubonsee only scored 12 points in the period, but held the Lancers to only wight points to take a 53-30 lead into the final stanza. The Chiefs then poured it on in the fourth quarter. A fast break basket by Delani Kosner capped off a Chiefs 14-1 run to start the period. A three-pointer from the right corner by Lily Fernandez with six minutes to go sparked a 16-0 Chiefs run as the Chiefs built a 50-point lead at 83-33. Over the final six minutes of the game the Lancers managed just one made free throw.
Every Chiefs player that saw action scored in the game, led by Kosner's 21 points before she fouled out midway through the fourth quarter. The freshman point guard also handed out four assists and made five steals. Janiece Thomas was right behind her with 19 points to go along with five assists, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Brooke Heiman recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards. Maddie Jude gave Waubonsee a fourth player in double figures with 10 points and six rebounds. Jaylynn Vana also hauled down 10 boards to help Waubonsee secure a 59-43 advantage off the glass.
Waubonsee is on the road this coming Saturday, January 15 when they travel to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the Madison College Wolfpack. The game is slated to tip-off at 1:00 p.m. (CDT) north of the border. Waubonsee is not scheduled to play again at home until Thursday, January 27 when they host Morton College in an ISCC showdown. The Panthers (13-2, 3-0) handed the Chiefs' their only conference loss thus far. In light of the local community's increasing cases of COVID-19, no spectators will are allowed at any Waubonsee athletic events through January 30.
