Chiefs roll over Chargers

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's women's basketball team dominated Carl Sandburg College throughout much of the game on the way to steamrolling the Chargers 83-58 on Saturday afternoon in Erickson Hall Gymnasium. The Chiefs (12-15) out scored the visitors from Galesburg 48-28 in the paint to pick up their fifth win in their last six games.

The Chargers got on the scoreboard first as Sophia Gugliotta buried a three-pointer just 10 seconds into the contest. A minute later the Chiefs took the lead when Emily Hurst grabbed an offensive rebound and scored on a put back basket. Waubonsee never trailed again as they secured a 17-8 lead at the end of the period. The Chiefs gradually added to their lead throughout the second period and closed out the quarter on an 11-2 run to head to the locker room with a commanding 41-23 advantage.

Waubonsee continued to roll along by starting the second half with a 10-4 run, and then finished the third quarter on a 12-3 run. Along the way Brooke Heiman went 8 for 8 from the line as the Chiefs closed out the period ahead by 30 points. Early in the fourth quarter the Chiefs took their biggest lead at 69-37 as they coasted to the lopsided win.

Waubonsee's 'H-bomb' tandem of Hurst and Heiman led the way once again. The duo both booked 20 or more points for the sixth time in the last nine games. Over that span Heiman is averaging 24.0 points-per-game (PPG), while Hurst is scoring at a 19.3 PPG clip. Against the Chargers Hurst led all scorers with 26 points and hauled down 11 rebounds to post a double-double, her 10th of the season. Heiman tallied 22 points and snagged eight boards, going a perfect 8 for 8 from the foul line. In the process the sophomore guard moved past Amanda Wolf's 2000-2001 tally of 545 points scored in a single season with 548 points this year. Heiman now owns the third highest single-season total in Waubonsee women's basketball history.

Angelina Schlinger chipped in with 17 points and handed out seven assists, while her sister Kaila Schlinger pulled down 10 rebounds, dished out four assists and made three steals. Lily Fernandez also reached double figures contributing 10 points, and Annika Bielskis registered five assists and corralled eight boards in the win. Elly Bentley was the lone scorer in double digits for Sandburg with 18 points.

Coach Jim Williams' squad travels to Elgin Community College on Tuesday, February 21 to take on the Spartans at 5:15 p.m. in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) contest. Waubonsee's final home game is set for Thursday, February 23 when they host Oakton Community College in another ISCC match-up starting at 5:15 p.m. in Erickson Hall Gymnasium. The Chiefs will close out their ISCC and regular season on Saturday, February 25 when they head to south suburban Cicero to square off against top-ranked and undefeated Morton College. The game, originally scheduled for this past Thursday before being postponed due to icy road conditions, will begin at 1:00 p.m. The men's contest will follow at 3:00 p.m. that day.
