MATC overwhelms Chiefs in Milwaukee

(Milwaukee, WI) – Waubonsee Community College's women's basketball team fell behind early and could never recover as Milwaukee Area (WI) Technical College ran away with a 102-37 victory at Alverno College's Reiman Gymnasium on the south side of Milwaukee. The Stormers (5-2) out rebounded the Chiefs 69-23 and held Waubonsee (2-4) to 19 percent shooting (13 for 69) overall in rolling to the lopsided win.

The Stormers used their superior height to control the boards on the way to jumping out to a quick 8-0 lead. The Chiefs finally got on the board three minutes into the contest when Ashleigh Wackerlin scored on a breakaway lay-up. However, Milwaukee Tech's 6'1" Adrianna Sapp and 5'11" Mikkalla Robertson helped the home team build a 13-2 lead. The Stormers extended the lead to 20-6 with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. A put back basket in the closing seconds of the period by Milwaukee Tech's 5'10" Rachel Schiles made the score 28-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Katie Baker buried a pair of three-pointers early in the second quarter to try to get the Chiefs going offensively. Unfortunately, Waubonsee could not stop the trio of Robertson, Sapp and Schiles as the Stormers surged ahead 44-17 midway through the second quarter. All three reached double digits in scoring in the first half as Milwaukee Tech took a comfortable 54-22 at the break.

Four minutes into the second half the Stormers upped their lead to 41 points as 5'9" Sania Thomas got involved offensively as well, reaching double figures in scoring herself. Milwaukee Tech continued to pour it on as they increased their lead to 75-24 with three minutes left in the third period. A turn around 5-foot jumper by Wackerlin snapped a Chiefs' six-minute scoring dry spell to make the score 78-26 with two minutes to go in the period. A driving lay-in by Ma'Liyah Hodges in the final minute closed out the scoring with the Stormers in front 82-29 heading to the final period.

A great pass from Angelina Schlinger to Ellie Baum for a lay-in got the Chiefs going to begin the fourth quarter. However, a pair of fast break lay-ups by Robertson extended the lead to 93-33 midway through the period. Milwaukee Tech reached the century mark with three minutes to go when Robertson made a steal and scored on a breakaway lay-in. An inside basket by Alexis Trousdale in the final seconds closed out the scoring.

Baker finished with 10 points, three assists and two steals for Waubonsee. Trousdale also netted 10 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Schlinger dished out five assists and grabbed five rebounds.
