Chiefs, Cyclones showdown this Wednesday

(Sugar Grove, IL.) - The last several years the battle for the top spot in both the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) and the NJCAA's Region IV has come down to either Waubonsee Community College or Moraine Valley Community College. This year is no different as the Chiefs' (10-0-1, 4-0-0) are set to host the Cyclones (10-0-1, 3-0-0) this Wednesday, October 3 in a 4:00 p.m. (CST) match which will likely determine the ISCC Champion and the number one seed for the upcoming Region IV Tournament. Moraine Valley, which has won the ISCC title the last three years after Waubonsee won it in 2014, comes into the match ranked 18th nationally in the most recent NJCAA Division I poll.

Waubonsee and Moraine Valley both are among the leaders nationally in several statistical categories. The Cyclones are fifth in goals scored with 59 and the Chiefs are right behind them in sixth with 57 goals. Moraine Valley is fifth in points with 161, while Waubonsee is seventh with 153 points. The Cyclones are eighth nationally with 43 assists and Waubonsee is closely behind them with 39 assists. Moraine Valley has also allowed just eight goals in their 11 matches, while Waubonsee has allowed only 12 goals overall.

The Chiefs are led by freshman Isabel Cerda who is eighth nationally in goals scored and points with 21 and 47, respectively. The Plainfield South product, who missed two of the Chiefs' last three matches with an ankle sprain, also has four game-winning goals on the season. Freshman goal keeper Alexis Coronilla has filled in more than adequately the last seven matches after sophomore Tanner Prellberg injured her shoulder. Coronilla has allowed just one goal while recording seven wins in net for Waubonsee. Her current goals-against-average (GAA) of 0.16 and her save percentage of .960 are the best among all NJCAA Division I keepers. The Cyclones counter with a tremendous keeper of their own in Maribel Carmona who has posted a 0.72 GAA, five shutouts and is tied for the lead nationally with 10 wins. Mairead Ruane leds Moraine Valley's balanced offense with a dozen goals and four assists on the season.
