(Sugar Grove, IL.) - For the most part the showdown between Waubonsee Community College and nationally-ranked Moraine Valley Community College lived up to the hype. However, the story did not unfold how the host Chiefs had planned. In a battle between two unbeaten teams vying for the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference title and the top seed in the upcoming Region IV Tournament, the Cyclones were able to take advantage of their opportunites and score a 3-1 victory. After several rainy days of below normal temperatures in the 50's, Waubonsee (10-1-1, 4-1) and Moraine Valley (11-0-1, 4-0) took the pitch on a suddenly blustery, 88 degree day. 

Waubonsee got on the scoreboard first when Taylor Zitkus drilled a free kick from 30 yards out into the back of the net just 10 minutes into the match. Moraine Valley pulled even in the 30th minute when Sylvia Kordaczka lofted a shot that bounced over and out of the reach of Chiefs' keeper Tanner Prellberg to knot the score. The game remained tied heading into the second half, but it didn't stay that way long. Kordaczka netted her second goal of the day off a free kick in the 49th minute, sending past Waubonsee's Alexis Coronilla who had taken over from Prellberg in the second half. Just three minutes later the Chiefs were guilty of a hand ball foul in the box resulting in a Cyclones' penalty kick. Kordaczka took full advantage of the situation and tallied her third goal of the game to put the Cyclones in front 3-1. Moraine Valley was then able to play keep away and control the ball the rest of the way.

For the match the 18th-ranked Cyclones out shot Waubonsee 12-4. Prellberg was credited with four saves in the first half, while Coronilla had five saves in the second period. Zitkus' goal was her third of the season. Cyclones' keeper Maribel Carmona finished with three saves. Kordaczka, who entered the day with just two goals on the season, upped her season total to five with the 'hat trick.' The Chiefs will be in action again this coming Saturday, October 6 when they host Heartland Community College (0-10) beginning at noon.
