(Sugar Grove, IL) - Waubonsee Community College edged visiting Bryant & Stratton College 2-1 in their opening match of the Region IV Division I Women's Soccer Tournament. The second-seeded Chiefs controlled much of the action, out shooting the seventh-seeded Bobcats 18-7 for the game. However, the second year program from Milwaukee was up to the challenge defensively thwarting numerous potential scoring opportunities for the Chiefs. Waubonsee (16-2-1) will host the winner between third-seeded Oakton Community College (9-2-2) and sixth-seeded South Suburban College (9-8) on Wednesday, October 24 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Waubonsee got on the board in the 18th minute when Hinckley-Big Rock graduate Meghan Menzel blasted a shot past Bobcats' keeper Derica Ohms for her 19th goal of the season with an assist from Isabel Cerda. The Chiefs took that 1-0 lead into the break, but it did not last long. With the wind at their back Bryant & Stratton (5-7-1) tied it in the first minute of the second half when a long shot sailed over the head of Chiefs' keeper Tanner Prellberg to tie the game. Waubonsee kept the pressure on the Bobcats and then took the lead when Molly Schiltz scored on a penalty kick in the 57th minute. The Chiefs then held off the Bobcats over the last 30 minutes of play to move on to the semi-finals. Prellberg was credited with six saves, while Ohms recorded 16 saves in defeat.
