(Sugar Grove, IL) –Waubonsee Community College's women's soccer team played their first home game in over a year and a half. From the Chiefs' perspective the wait, although frustrating at times, was worth it. Coach Brad Schlemmer's Chiefs routed visiting Triton College 10-0 to improve to 3-1 overall on the coronavirus abbreviated 2021 Spring season. Waubonsee's last home game was a 4-0 victory over Kishwaukee College on October 11, 2019, a total of 561 days ago.
After such an extended time not getting to play on their home turf, the Chiefs did not waste any time getting on the scoreboard. Just six minutes into the match Olivia McPherson went high into the air to head in a perfectly placed corner kick from Sarai Munoz. Six minutes later Eliana Zagoren drilled a shot into the upper left corner of the goal from 10 yards out off an assist from Yari Aguado. Waubonsee took a 3-0 lead in the 32nd minute when Munoz smacked a left-footed shot from 20 yards out just over the outstretched arm of the Trojans' goalkeeper. Not even three minutes later Zagoren zigged and zagged through three Triton defenders and tapped in a shot from five yards out to make it 4-0. McPherson booked her second goal of the day and sixth of the season in the 39th minute with an assist from Rachel Polignone to give the Chiefs plenty of breathing room heading into halftime.
With an assist from Kiara McPherson, Waubonsee's Katie Jones scored in the first minute of the second half to officially turn the match into a rout. Lindsay Ferris added another goal in the 60th minute with an assist from Zagoren, and Tori Prellberg made it 8-0 as she scored a few minutes later with an assist from Ashley Bailey. Just a minute later Munoz tallied her second goal of the game off an assist from Aguado to put the Chiefs ahead 9-0. Zagoren finished the scoring with six minutes remaining when she recorded her third goal of the day. The initial shot by the Batavia High School alumnus went off the cross bar and ricocheted straight out in front of the goal where she beat a Triton defender and the keeper to the ball and tapped it in from five yards out for a hat trick.
Waubonsee out shot the Trojans 30-6 overall for the match. The Chiefs' Isabelle Harkleroad recorded three saves in the first half, while Priscilla Vargas minded the net in the second half and also was credited with three saves to preserve the shutout. The Chiefs are in action again this coming Wednesday, April 28 when they travel to Des Plaines to battle Oakton Community College beginning at 4:00 p.m. (CST) in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match. Waubonsee is also set to play Elgin Community College in an ISCC match-up on Friday, April 30 at Mooseheart High School's Stadium in North Aurora with a 6:00 p.m. start.
