Chiefs Blast Morton in ISCC Match

(Sugar Grove, IL) –Waubonsee Community College's women's soccer team routed visiting Morton College 9-0 in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match. The lopsided victory moves the Chiefs' overall record to 6-1-1 and 3-0 in the ISCC for Waubonsee's coronavirus abbreviated 2021 Spring season. For the match the Chiefs out shot the Panthers 43-0 and controlled much of the action, which was predominately played at the Panthers' end of the field.

The Chiefs had 15 shots on goal in the first half alone, breaking through in the 18th minute of the match. The McPherson twins teamed up for the Chiefs' first goal as Kiara McPherson lofted a pass from the left corner to Olivia McPherson in the middle of the field. The freshman striker quickly booted the ball into the upper right corner of the net from 12 yards out for her 10th goal of the spring.

Four minutes later Waubonsee scored again, this time it was Kiara finding the back of the net with an assist from Olivia. The freshman midfielder unleashed a laser of a shot from 15 yards out into the upper right corner as well to make it 2-0. The Chiefs tallied a third goal in the 31st minute as Katie Jones scored from close range with an assist from Kiara McPherson. Sarai Munoz then made it 4-0 in favor of Waubonsee when her shot from 10 yards out went through the hands of Morton keeper Anibeth Bravo in the 41st minute. Yari Aguado was credited with the assist as Waubonsee began to pull away.

Waubonsee carried that 4-0 lead into the second half and quickly added to it. Kiara McPherson again registered the assist as she booted the ball from the left side to near the front of the goal. Her sister Olivia then tapped the ball into the net between two Morton defenders for her 11th goal.  

In the 60th minute Eliana Zagoren booked her sixth goal of the year off an assist from Munoz to push the Chiefs' lead to 6-0. Barely a minute later Ashley Bailey faked out Bravo and another Panthers' defender, knocking it into an empty net for her first score of the season. Bailey then scored again in the 70th minute drilling in a left-footed shot from 5 yards out on the left side to make it 8-0, with Zagoren getting the assist. Munoz then capped off the scoring when she blasted her sixth goal of the season into the right corner of the net off of an assist from Cynthia Brunswig.

The Chiefs are set to play their final regular season game next Wednesday, May 12 when they host Moraine Valley Community College. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. on the Chiefs' pitch in Sugar Grove.
