Chiefs Knock Off Nemesis, Win ISCC Title

(Sugar Grove, IL) –Waubonsee Community College's women's soccer team captured the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) title with a resounding 9-0 win over visiting Moraine Valley Community College on Wednesday afternoon. The championship is Waubonsee's first since 2014 with the Cyclones winning four straight titles from 2015 to 2018, and the College of Lake County capturing the title in 2019. The Chiefs finish the coronavirus abbreviated 2021 Spring season 7-1-1 overall and 4-0 in the ISCC. Waubonsee heads into the Region IV Division II Tournament as the top seed in the District B bracket. The Chiefs will host Triton College this coming Sunday, May 16 in the first round of the tournament. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m. on the Chiefs' pitch.

Afterwards Chiefs' head coach Brad Schlemmer got emotional addressing his team after they finally got past Moraine Valley, which has been his program's nemesis. "Every year since 2014 they have ended our season, and after awhile you begin to wonder if we will ever get past them again. Today we took it to them and left no doubt. It's a special moment for our program." Moraine Valley had won 10 straight against the Chiefs entering today's match, including eliminating Waubonsee from the Region IV Tournament the last five years in a row.

In their romp over the Cyclones, Waubonsee got on the scoreboard 10 minutes into the match when a center pass went through the legs of a Cyclones' defender. Waubonsee's Olivia McPherson out raced keeper Jocelyn Estrada to the ball on the left side of the goal and smacked it into the back of the net. Five minutes later the Chiefs took a 2-0 lead when Katie Jones blasted a shot past Estrada from 10 yards out off of a nice centering pass from Kiara McPherson for her fifth goal of the season.

Barely 45 seconds later Waubonsee tacked on a third score on an incredible shot by Rachel Polignone. The sophomore from Batavia drilled a shot from 30 yards out that found the top of the net over the outstretched arms of Estrada. Olivia McPherson then raced ahead of the pack and tapped in a left-footed shot to the right corner for a 4-0 lead in the 29th minute.

In the 33rd minute Eliana Zagoren continued the onslaught with her eighth goal of the year, sneaking a shot through the hands of a diving Estrada. Two minutes later Sarai Munoz put the Chiefs in front 6-0 by booking her seventh goal of the season. The Aurora West High School product lofted a shot from 20 yards out that just went over the outstretched hands of a leaping Estrada. The Chiefs took that commanding lead into halftime and then picked up right where they left off early in the second half, adding to their substantial lead just two minutes after play resumed. Olivia McPherson gained control of the ball off a centering pass and drilled a shot into the left corner of the goal from 10 yards out. Her third 'hat trick' goal gave her 15 on the season.

Raneen Betouni went into goal for the Cyclones in the 55th minute and turned back a few Waubonsee shots before Zagoren got one past her in the 61st minute. The sophomore forward from Batavia tracked down a pass near the right post of the goal and faked out Betouni, dribbling right and then left, tapping in the Chiefs' eighth goal of the game. Kiara McPherson then finished off the scoring in the 76th minute when she bounced a free kick past Betouni to make it 9-0.

Waubonsee out shot the Cyclones 30-3 for the match with keeper Daisy Quinonez getting credited with three saves in the shutout victory. The Chiefs have not been scored upon now in their last seven matches, out scoring their opponents 40-0.
