(Sugar Grove, IL) –Waubonsee Community College's women's soccer team improved to 7-0 on the season with a 3-1 win over visiting Black Hawk College. The Chiefs scored in the opening minute of the match and controlled a majority of the action, but struggled to find the back of the net throughout the 90 minutes of play. Despite missing four starters, Waubonsee still managed to out shoot the Braves 31- 4 overall.
Bailey Prichard drilled a left-footed shot from five yards away into the right corner of the net just 0:50 into the match to start the scoring. The Chiefs controlled much of the action throughout the half, but could not find the back of the net. In the 41st minute Katie Jones had a header from point blank range that was deflected by Braves' keeper Regan Walston, bouncing off the bottom of the cross bar and back into Walston's hands. Waubonsee nearly scored again in the final minute of the first half when Nichole Jacobsen lofted a shot that bounced over Walston's head and off the cross bar once more.
Trailing just 1-0 entering the second period Black Hawk almost pulled even in 55th minute. However, Isabelle Harkleroad made a diving stop on a sharp shot to her right to preserve the lead. Ten minutes later though the Braves' Jasmin Capilla blasted a shot into the upper right corner out of the reach of a leaping Harkleroad to knot the score at 1-all.
That goal seemed to wake up Waubonsee, which regained the lead in the 68th minute when a corner kick by Sarai Munoz sailed over a leaping Walston and was poked in on the far side by Tsion White. The Chiefs tallied a third goal in the 75th minute when another Waubonsee corner kick by Prichard trickled through traffic and Emily De Avila tapped the ball into the far side of the net.
Waubonsee, ranked fourth nationally in the latest NJCAA Division II poll, is in action again next Wednesday, September 22 when they head to Elgin Community College for an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match beginning at 4:00 p.m. The Chiefs return home to Sugar Grove on Saturday, September 25 to host Bryant & Stratton (WI) College from Milwaukee in a 5:00 p.m. match.
