Chiefs down MVCC in home opener

(Sugar Grove, IL) - After getting blitzed in their season opener last Thursday evening by seventh-ranked Northeast (NE) Community College on the turf at the University of Chicago's Jackman Field, Waubonsee Community College's women's soccer team rebounded in a big way. Coach Brad Schlemmer's crew bounced back with a solid 5-1 victory over Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference foe Moraine Valley Community College in their 2022 home opener.

Waubonsee got on the board early in the match as Madison Stevens scored off of an assist from Amy Flores just three minutes into the contest. In the 20th minute the Cyclones had one of their better scoring opportunities, but Chiefs' keeper Paige MacRitchie turned back a pair of close-range shots. Five minutes later another Moraine Valley shot sailed well over the cross bar from 20 yards out as the home team maintained a 1-0 lead.

A foul on the Cyclones in the box gave Waubonsee a penalty kick in the 36th minute, which Flores quickly turned into a two goal advantage. The sophomore converted the opportunity by blasting a shot into the right corner of the net to easily beat Moraine Valley keeper Jazmin Ayala. Two minutes later MacRitchie made a nice diving deflection of a Cyclones' shot to help preserve Waubonsee's 2-0 lead as the teams went into halftime.

Another foul on the Cyclones just a minute into the second half resulted in another penalty kick for Waubonsee. Anna Burke then drilled a shot into the left corner of the net to give the Chiefs a commanding 3-0 lead. In the 84th minute Waubonsee tacked on a fourth goal when Sarai Munoz made a great pass from the left side of the box to Ashleigh Wackerlin who knocked it past Ayala from 10 yards out. Daisy Quinonez, who took over in goal for Waubonsee in the second half, nearly secured the shutout with five outstanding saves down the stretch. However, with three minutes remaining a foul on Waubonsee gave the Cyclones a penalty kick. Quinonez leaned right as the penalty kick sailed past her on the left to break the shutout.

In the final minute Wackerlin lined a centering pass to Julissa Valtierrez who bodied up the ball to gain control of it. She then quickly drilled a shot off the ensuing bounce that found the upper left corner of the net from 12-yards out for the final score of the game with just 0:16 to go. MacRitchie finished with eight saves, while Waubonsee compiled a shots on goal advantage of 20-9. The Chiefs are in action again this coming Saturday, September 3 when they host Kankakee Community College at 2:00 p.m.
