(Sugar Grove, IL) – Sparked by Ashleigh Wackerlin's three goals Waubonsee Community College's women's soccer team scored a 3-0 victory over visiting Kankakee Community College. The Chiefs (2-1) and Cavaliers (2-2-1) battled it out on a warm and sunny day in Sugar Grove, which featured a mandatory water break midway through both halves. In the end it was the Chiefs who kept the heat on the Cavaliers' defense for most of the match, compiling 25 shots with 17 being on goal.
Waubonsee put pressure on Kankakee right from the outset, getting a shot on goal just half a minute into the match. The Chiefs' persistent offensive attack eventually paid dividends in the 12th minute of the match. Wackerlin raced out ahead of the Cavaliers' defense and made a shot on keeper Mia Robbins from eight yards out. Robbins dove and deflected the ball, which then trickled away toward the left corner of the goal. Wackerlin quickly followed up her shot and poked it in before a sprawling Robbins could recover.
Waubonsee stayed in control and on the offensive, nearly adding another score eight minutes later. In the 20th minute Sarai Munoz blasted a shot from 22 yards out that bounced straight back off the cross bar. Most of the action remained on the Cavaliers' end of the pitch throughout the first half as Wackerlin added her second goal in the 35th minute. The freshman from Hinckley-Big Rock took a pass from Julissa Valtierrez five yards out from the goal on the left side and knocked it past Robbins inside the near post. The score remained 2-0 heading into halftime as both teams looked for some shade to rest in.
Wackerlin then completed the 'hat trick' just thirty seconds into the second half. She received a pass from Madison Stevens and then maneuvered through and around three Kankakee defenders before drilling a shot into the right corner of the net. The Chiefs continued to pepper the Cavalier's goal throughout the second period but could not add to their lead.
Paige MacRitchie and Daisy Quinonez combined for the shutout in goal for Waubonsee, with MacRitchie registering four saves and Quinonez finishing with 10. Kaitlyn Randle, who replaced Robbins in net for the Cavaliers in the second half, made several outstanding stops to keep the Chiefs from adding to their lead. The Chiefs play again next Wednesday, September 7 when they host Prairie State College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match-up starting at 4:00 p.m.
