Chiefs pull away in second half for ISCC win

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's women's soccer team moved to 2-0 in Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) play with a 6-0 victory over Prairie State College. The Chiefs (3-1, 2-0) controlled much of the action on the way to downing the visiting Pioneers (1-3, 0-2). For the match Waubonsee out shot Prairie State 37-4 to cruise to the win.

Waubonsee's Ashleigh Wackerlin picked up where she left off after booking a 'hat trick' in the Chiefs' last match on Saturday. In the 18th minute the Pioneers' keeper Jasmine Elias came out from the net to try and intercept a pass by Waubonsee's Anna Burke. However, Wackerlin got to the ball first and maneuvered around her and finished off an easy tap in for her fifth goal of the season. In the 25th minute Elias made a great stop on a shot by Burke from 15 yards out to keep the score at 1-0.  Waubonsee continued to control much of the action throughout the first half, but could not add to its lead before the intermission.

Just three minutes into the second half the Chiefs were finally able to break through for a second score when Sarai Munoz took a feed from Amy Flores and finished with a blast from 10 yards out into the right corner of the goal. It didn't take long for the Chiefs to tack on another score. Only four minutes later Waubonsee went ahead 3-0 when Julissa Valtierrez received a pass from Molly Herbig and angled in from the left side, poking a shot past a diving Elias from eight yards out.

In the 60th minute Arizbeth Sanchez drilled a shot from 20 yards out to the back of the net for a 4-0 Waubonsee lead to break it open.  Waubonsee nearly tallied a fifth goal in the 67th minute when a foul on the Pioneers gave the Chiefs a free kick from 22 yards out. Munoz' curving shot was tipped up in the air by Elias and snagged by the Prairie State keeper just before Wackerlin arrived on the scene. Waubonsee extended its lead to 5-0 in 77th minute when Nichole Jacobsen finished off a flurry of activity in front of the Prairie State goal. After a shot hit off the cross bar, the sophomore from Plano got control of the rebound and tapped the ball into the left side of the net from point blank range.

Valtierrez booked her second goal of the match in the 87th minute when Elias lost the handle on her first shot from the left side. The freshman poked the ball away and then ripped a shot into the left side of the net from five yards away to end the scoring. Paige MacRitchie recorded the shutout win in goal for Waubonsee, registering four save on the day. The Chiefs' next match is not until a week from now when they head to north suburban Grayslake to battle the College of Lake County in a key ISCC match-up. The September 14 match is set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
