Chiefs fall to Triton in regular season finale

(Sugar Grove, IL) –The showdown between Waubonsee Community College and Triton College for home field advantage throughout the upcoming Region 4 Division II Women's Soccer Tournament went to the visitors. The 19th ranked Trojans (10-0) remained undefeated with a 3-1 victory over the Chiefs. Waubonsee (8-6), who last week captured the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference title for the third straight time, will now have to potentially travel to River Grove if the two teams meet in the championship round two weeks from now. The Chiefs are set to host Kankakee Community College in the first round of the tournament next Saturday, October 29, beginning at noon.

The Trojans controlled much of the action in the early going. However, in the 26th minute the Chiefs' first shot on goal by Anna Burke took a big bounce and went off the hands of Trojans' keeper Juliana Joaquin and over her head. The ball bounded across the goal line and then hit the left post, bouncing away from the goal. While the sideline official signaled a goal, players on both sides continued to compete. The Chiefs' Ashleigh Wackerlin quickly controlled the rebound and poked the ball into the opposite side of the goal for good measure. That set off a bit of controversy that resulted in a yellow card for the Trojans' head coach Piotr Sliwa.

Waubonsee nearly added to its lead in the 36th minute when Nichole Jacobsen got free on a breakaway, but misfired just left of the net from 8 yards out as she tried to get it past Joaquin. Five minutes later Joaquin raced out from goal to stop a potential shot by Wackerlin, sliding into Waubonsee's freshman forward. Joaquin was down for a couple minutes, but continued in goal despite an obvious hobble in her step. When play resumed the Trojans' Alexa Herrera lofted a shot from 15 yards out that Chiefs' keeper Paige MacRitchie snagged to keep the visitors off the board. The Chiefs were unable to put any pressure on Joaquin from there as the half ended with the Chiefs still in front 1-0.

When the second half began Triton looked like a different team. With a steady 10 mile-per-hour south wind now at their backs the Trojans had a shot go across the mouth of the goal and had three corner kicks in the opening two minutes. They were finally able to break through a minute later and tie the game when Herrera blasted a shot into the left corner of the net from 10 yards out past a diving Daisy Quinonez, who had entered into goal for Waubonsee. Only a minute later Herrera did it again, this time drilling a shot from the left wing that hit the right post and went in for a quick 2-1 Triton lead. In the 53rd minute Quinonez made a leaping save to deflect another Triton shot as they continued to assert themselves on the offensive end of the field. The Trojans then took a commanding 3-1 lead in the 60th minute when Stephanie Mancha blasted a shot in the right corner of the net from 12 yards out for her first goal of the season.

Waubonsee had a couple opportunities to get back to within a goal down the stretch. Wackerlin had a shot on goal in the 67th minute from 7 yards out on the left side that was deflected away by Joaquin. Madison Stevens had a shot 10 minutes later that sailed over the top of the cross bar from 10 yards away. In the 82nd minute Wackerlin scored on a close range shot, but it was negated by a foul on the Chiefs that had freed her up to get the kick off. From there Triton, which early in the week handed seventh-ranked South Suburban College its only loss of the season thus far, was able to keep the ball away from Waubonsee to secure the road win and home field advantage throughout the Region 4 Tournament.

For the match Triton outshot the Chiefs 23-9 with 11 being shots on goal to just six for the Chiefs. The Trojans also had a big advantage in corner kicks with 11 to only three for Waubonsee. MacRitchie was credited with four saves in the first half in net for the Chiefs, while Quinonez finished with 10 saves.
