(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's Women's Soccer team evened its overall record to 2-2 with a solid 5-0 victory over the College of DuPage. The Chiefs controlled much of the action on the way to downing the Chaparrals (1-3) on a sunny and warm afternoon.
Waubonsee made a bid to get on the scoreboard first as Ashleigh Wackerlin got open on a breakaway in the eighth minute. However, her shot sailed just over the top of the crossbar. Just moments later the Chiefs had two more shots narrowly miss with Chaparrals' keeper Caitlin Yurkovich making a great diving stop on the second offering. Waubonsee continued to pepper the DuPage net as the match approached the midway point of the first half but could not break through.
A foul on the Chiefs in the 27th minute gave DuPage a free kick from 20 yards away and a prime opportunity to strike first. However, Anna Odisho's ensuing shot went over the cross bar to keep the match scoreless. Three minutes later Yurkovich then made two outstanding stops in quick succession, the second one giving Waubonsee its fifth corner kick of the game. The Chiefs cashed in as Mariana Martinez headed the right-side corner kick from Madison Stevens past Yurkovich and into the far side of the net for her first career goal and a 1-0 lead.
Waubonsee had a few more chances to add to its lead and finally did so in the 42nd minute. Martinez drilled a shot from the left wing that just got over the outstretched arms of Yurkovich and into the upper right corner of the net to make it 2-0. Coach Brad Schlemmer's crew headed into the break with the two-goal advantage, having compiled 10 shots on goal to none for the visitors.
Early in the second period the Chiefs had a couple more chances to add to their lead, but Yurkovich made a pair of stops, deflecting the second shot away and giving the Chiefs another corner kick in the 55th minute. Waubonsee was able to tack on a third goal as Emma Turner received the kick from Stevens in the middle of the box and quickly drilled a shot into the upper right corner from seven yards out for her first career goal.
The Chiefs continued to maintain control throughout the second half. Yurkovich was able to turn back a few more shots before Kylie Brazill took a pass from Arizabeth Sanchez and knocked in her fourth goal of the season in the 76th minute to put Waubonsee ahead 4-0. In the final minute of play Brazill zigged and zagged through the Chaparrals defense and poked in her second goal of the day from five yards out to put the icing on the Chiefs' win. Stevens was credited with the assist, her third of the day.
For the game Waubonsee held a commanding 25-2 edge in shots on goal, with a 7-1 lead in corner kicks. Chiefs' keeper Luz Espino registered a pair of saves in goal before giving way to Emma Shapiama with 10 minutes left in the match. Yurkovich finished a busy day for the Chaparrals with 15 saves. Waubonsee is action again next Wednesday, September 6 when they travel to south suburban Palos Hills to battle Moraine Valley Community College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match-up. The Chiefs are Cyclones are set to kickoff at 4:00 p.m.
