Chiefs Clinch 4th Straight ISCC Championship

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's Women's Soccer team clinched their fourth straight Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) title with a 5-0 victory over Oakton Community College. Over the last four seasons coach Brad Schlemmer's Chiefs have gone a combined 18-2 in ISCC play. The conference championship is Waubonsee's seventh in program history. The Chiefs (9-5, 4-1) for the most part dominated play from start to finish, out shooting the Owls (4-6-2, 1-3-1) for the game 42-11. Waubonsee also owned a huge 18-3 edge in shots on goal and 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Just forty-five seconds into the match the Chiefs' Brigid Gannon set the tone by rocketing a shot from the right wing into the upper left corner of the net. Her ninth goal of the season gave Waubonsee a quick 1-0 lead. Waubonsee nearly tacked on a second goal in the seventh minute when Ashleigh Wackerlin got past the Oakton defense for a breakaway. With an Owls' defender a step behind on her left hip the sophomore forward fired off a shot on the run from 10 yards out. However, Owls' keeper Selina Chavez was able to deflect the ball away.

Waubonsee continued to pepper the Oakton goal with shots as the first half progressed. Kylie Brazill had a golden opportunity in the 34th minute but her shot sailed over the crossbar. A minute later a header by Wackerlin from close range went off the right post and caromed away. By the time the halftime buzzer sounded Waubonsee had outshot the Owls 21-5 yet still led only 1-0 because Chavez was able to turn back six of the Chiefs' seven shots on goal.

In the first minute of the second half Oakton got its first shot on goal of the match. Chiefs' keeper Luz Espino snagged the ball to keep the score 1-0. Five minutes later Oakton's Emma Mueller almost knotted the score but her shot from 15 yards out ricocheted off the cross bar. In the 57th minute the Chiefs had two prime opportunities to score. Chavez swatted a shot from Wackerlin out of bounds and Waubonsee missed a point blank shot off the ensuing corner kick. A moment later Chavez made another sensational diving stop of a shot from Brazill to keep it a one score match.

In the 65th minute Gannon launched a shot from 20 yards out that Chavez leaped and tipped over the crossbar giving the Chiefs a corner kick. Gannon then placed a perfect pass on the corner kick to Wackerlin in traffic and the 5'11" forward headed the ball into the right corner for a 2-0 lead. That goal sparked Waubonsee's offense as just a minute later Gannon drilled another shot from 25 yards away that soared over Chavez's outstretched arms and into net for her 10th goal of the season. Madison Stevens then made it 4-0 as she poked the ball in from point-blank range after it pinballed off several players in front of the goal. The Chiefs then added a fifth score in the 77th minute, their fourth tally in a stretch of 12 minutes of play. Gannon and Wackerlin teamed up again on another corner kick as a light rain began to fall. Wackerlin controlled Gannon's entry pass and blasted a shot past Chavez from eight yards out for her second goal of the day and 10th score of the season.

Waubonsee's Espino registered three saves, while Chavez finished with 13 saves in net for Oakton. The Chiefs are in action again this coming Saturday, October 14 when they host Rock Valley College beginning at noon. The men's contest between the Chiefs and Golden Eagles is set to follow starting at 2:30 p.m.
