Brazill Headlines Chiefs Post-Season Honorees

Nine members of Waubonsee Community College's Women's Soccer team were recognized for their outstanding play during the 2023 season. Kylie Brazill highlighted the Chiefs' big contingent as she was named the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) Player of the Year and to the All-Region 4 team. Defender Anna Corneliusen was also selected to the All-ISCC First Team and the All-Region squad, while Chiefs' keeper Luz Espino was chosen All-ISCC Second Team along with being tabbed All-Region. Forward Ashleigh Wackerlin was named All-ISCC First Team, while midfielders Brigid Gannon and Amara Olivas were each chosen All-ISCC Second Team, and Mariana Martinez and Madison Stevens were both tabbed All-ISCC Honorable Mention. Chiefs' head coach Brad Schlemmer was selected the ISCC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year.

A sophomore forward, Brazill led Waubonsee with 18 goals on the season which tied her for 21st nationally among all NJCAA Division II players. She compiled 37 points tying her for 40th nationally in that category. The Geneva High School graduate also registered three game-winning goals on the season.

Corneliusen, an Oswego High School product, was a key cog in the Chiefs' defense which registered five shutouts on the season. The sophomore defender even managed to tally four assists while helping Waubonsee hold opponents to three or less goals in 12 of their 16 matches.

Espino, a freshman keeper, tied for eighth nationally among Division II goal keepers with 142 saves. On the way to recording two shutouts and earning nine wins in net for Waubonsee, the Aurora East High School alumnus posted an .826 save percentage to tie for 11th nationally.

A Hinckley-Big Rock graduate, Wackerlin booked 10 goals and five assists on the season. The sophomore forward finished third on the team with 25 points overall. Gannon, a sophomore from Kaneland High School, tallied 10 goals and 10 assists. A native of Virgil, her 30 points were second on the team. The forward/midfielder also notched three game-winning goals during the course of the season.

A freshman midfielder from Aurora East High School, Olivas registered four goals and a pair of assists as part of Waubonsee's team total of 51 goals over 16 matches. Martinez, a freshman midfielder from Sycamore High School, scored three goals and was credited with three assists on the fall. A sophomore forward from St. Charles North High School, Stevens finished the year with three goals and nine assists.

Schlemmer guided the Chiefs to a 9-7 overall mark while also going 4-1 in conference play to win the ISCC title for the fourth straight year and seventh time in the program's history. Schlemmer has led Waubonsee to 142 wins in his 12 seasons as head coach, going 51-14-2 in ISCC play alone, a winning percentage of nearly 80 percent in conference matches.
