(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College's women's soccer team hosted Moraine Valley Community College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match Wednesday afternoon. After observing a moment of silence in remembrance of the 23rd anniversary of 9-11, the Chiefs (1-3, 1-1) immediately made some noise before eventually holding on for a 4-3 win over the Cyclones (2-1, 0-1). Waubonsee out played the Cyclones in the first half before the visitors second half rally fell short. For the game Moraine Valley held a slim overall edge in shots taken 20-19.
The Chiefs scored only a minute into the game when Amara Olivas drilled a shot in from eight yards out past Cyclones' keeper Ximena Delgado off a Waubonsee corner kick. In the 12th minute Olivas got off another solid shot from the right side, but Delgado snagged the ball to keep it a one goal game. A short time later defender Katelyn Curtis thwarted a breakaway by Moraine Valley's Olivia Jeziorczak with a steal.
Then midway through the first half Ana Morales blasted a shot from 30 yards out that went through the outstretched arms of Delgado to make it 2-0 Waubonsee. Moraine Valley made a bid to get on the board in 28th minute when Jeziorczak lined a shot from 10 yards out that Chiefs' keeper Luz Espino corralled. Abby Broadway then extended Waubonsee's lead to 3-0 when she ripped a shot into the left corner of the net in the 30th minute. A minute later a diving Espino turned back another Cyclones' bid to get on the scoreboard.
In the 37th minute the Chiefs added a fourth score when Yerelin Martinez-Favela's shot deflected off a Cyclones' defender and bounded past Delgado into the right corner of the net. Moraine Valley finally got on the board just before halftime as Heather Canny got past the Chiefs' defense and poked a shot into the right corner under the outstretched arms of Espino in the 42nd minute. That seemed to give the Cyclones some wind in their sails as they headed into the second half.
A sliding save by Delgado eight minutes into the second half prevented Isabel Chilelli from adding to the Chiefs' lead. Moraine Valley responded by netting a second score two minutes later as Camila Barragan rocketed a shot past Espino into the top left shelf to make it 4-2. The Cyclones kept the pressure on Waubonsee's defense and got within a goal in the 70th minute courtesy of a penalty kick with Canny drilling the PK into the upper left corner. The visitors nearly tied the game in the 80th minute but a close in shot by Lesly Echavarietta sailed over the cross bar. From there the Chiefs were able to salt away the remaining time to hold on for the victory and keep them in the running for another ISCC title.
Espino was credited with 13 saves in the match while Delgado gathered in 10 saves. Waubonsee is set to play again at home this coming Saturday, September 14 at noon against Madison (WI) College. Coach Brad Schlemmer's Chiefs are also at home next Wednesday, September 18 when they host Prairie State College in an ISCC match starting 4:00 p.m.
