(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's women's soccer team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in rolling past Joliet Junior College 4-0 on a warm and windy Saturday afternoon. The Chiefs (7-5) had a brisk wind at their backs in the first half and utilized it to score three times before the midway point of the first half. Waubonsee's defense kept the Wolves (5-7-1) off the scoreboard from that point to help head coach Brad Schlemmer record his 149th career coaching win. For the match the Chiefs outshot the Wolves 18-9 overall, including 6-4 in shots on goal.
Waubonsee got on the board first in the sixth minutes when Emma Turner bodied up a centering pass from Samantha Esquivel near the end line right of the goal. Turner then quickly smacked a shot over the outstretched hands of Wolves' keeper Maddie Schlismann to give the Chiefs a quick 1-0 lead. Five minutes later a pass into the Wolves' end of the field bounced over the head of a Joliet defender. Ana Morales then raced ahead of the Joliet defense and scored on a breakaway, blasting a shot into the right corner of the net. In the 16th minute Abby Broadway was in the right place at the right time for Waubonsee. Schlismann ran out from the net to stop a Chiefs' shot attempt, but she could not hang on to the ball, which bounced right to her in the center of the box. The freshman from Yorkville blasted a shot into the open net to give Waubonsee a commanding 3-0 lead.
The Wolves had a prime opportunity to get on the board in the 24th minute when Alexis Trippeer got a pass in front of the Chiefs goal. But her shot from eight yards out was knocked down by Chiefs' keeper Luz Espino, who quickly smothered the ball before Trippeer could follow up her shot. Espino turned back another shot by the Wolves in the 32nd minute as she made a diving stop to her right on a shot by Jalyssa Villafuerte from 10 yards out. Waubonsee's defense rose to the occasion a handful of other times to keep Joliet off the board as the half ended with the Chiefs ahead 3-0.
Waubonsee kept the pressure on the Wolves' defense in the first minutes of the second half, not letting Joliet take advantage of the southernly wind at their backs. The Chiefs had a pair of opportunities to add to their lead but misfired wide right of the net. In the 56th minute Espino leaped to snag a shot and thwart Joliet once more for one of her four saves. The Chiefs kept up their attack and forced the Wolves to remain on the defensive over the final 30 minutes of play. Broadway got off a clear shot from the right wing in the 75th minute that sailed just over the crossbar as time began to run out for Joliet. Waubonsee added a fourth score in the 86th minute as Isabel Chilelli took a crossing pass and drilled a shot into the left corner of the net from 12 yards out.
Waubonsee takes to the pitch again this coming Wednesday, October 9 when they host Elgin Community College in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Sugar Grove. The Chiefs need a win to set up a showdown with the College of Lake County on October 16 in Grayslake for the ISCC title.
