Chiefs clinch share of ISCC title

(Sugar Grove, IL.) –  Vying for at least a share of the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) title, Waubonsee Community College dominated visiting Oakton Community College on the way to a 7-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon. The Chiefs (4-4-3, 4-0-2) controlled much of the action as they outshot the Owls (2-10-1, 1-5) 37-5 overall, including a 21-4 advantage in shots on goal. Waubonsee finished tied for the ISCC championship with Elgin Community College, which downed the College of Lake County 1-0 in Grayslake to also finish with a 4-0-2 league record. The ISCC title is the fifth in the last six seasons for Waubonsee, sixth under head coach Brad Schlemmer and eighth overall in program history.

The Chiefs got on the board in the seventh minute when Abby Broadway got ahead of the Owls defense for a breakaway. The sophomore from Yorkville smashed a shot past Oakton keeper Savannah Sheehan and into the left corner for her eighth goal of the season. Seven minutes later Broadway made it 2-0 when she veered toward the middle of the box and unleashed a shot from 10 yards out that beat Sheehan and into the left corner of the net once more. Waubonsee continued to pepper the Owls goal and added a third score midway through the first half. Chiefs' defender Josie Rader launched a long pass downfield that Isabel Chilelli sprinted ahead of the Oakton defense and poked in past a diving Sheehan. Just three minutes later Makayla Lara made it 4-0 as she ripped a shot into the right corner just out of Sheehan's reach. Waubonsee registered a fifth goal in the 40th minute of play when Samantha Esquivel drilled an 8-yard shot from the right side into the far corner of the net. A minute later Marissa Galloway had a shot from the left side that went off Sheehan's hands and hit the right post before bounding away as the Chiefs took a 5-0 lead into the break. Waubonsee outshot Oakton 20-1 overall in the first half, including an 13-1 edge in shots on goal.

Shortly after the second half started the Chiefs picked up where they left off as Chilelli tallied her second goal on the day off with an assist from Broadway. The sophomore from Yorkville got a pass from Broadway just inside the goalies' box and drilled a shot into the back of the net. Lara extended the lead to 7-0 when she blasted a shot right past Sheehan from 10 yards out on the right side in the 52nd minute. The Owls nearly broke the shutout two minutes later, but Chiefs' keeper Isabella Delgado made a leaping stop to deflect a hard shot away and keep the visitors off the board. Waubonsee almost booked an eighth goal in the 63rd minute in a sequence where two shots hit the left post before Sheehan snagged a third shot from close range. The Chiefs also had another shot hit the crossbar in the 78th minute as they continued to wear down and attack the Owls.

Delgado finished with four saves in getting the shutout win in the net for Waubonsee. Sheehan was credited with 14 saves for Oakton. The Chiefs are in action again next Wednesday when they travel to LaSalle's Rotary Park to take on Illinois Valley Community College beginning at 4:00 p.m.
