Chiefs clinch 2nd ISCC title in last 3 years

(Hanover Park, IL.) - Waubonsee Community College clinched the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) title with a 6-3 win over Elgin Community College. It is the second ISCC crown for the Chiefs in the last three years. Coach Jennifer McMullen's squad went undefeated (5-0) in league play and compiled 32 team points to edge second place College of Lake County by just two. Waubonsee also extended its' winning streak to 10 matches, improving to 10-1 overall on the season with the only blemish being a season-opening loss to four-year school Judson College.

Waubonsee fell behind early against the Spartans at the Centre Court Athletic Club in Hanover Park. Marissa Silva fell 6-0, 6-2 in her number one singles match versus Cyra Oh. However, Julie Pruneda downed Alejandra Abella 6-2, 6-3 at number two singles to get Waubonsee on track. With only four players, Elgin had to forfeit the number five and number six singles matchs, along with the number three doubles match. Therefore, all the Chiefs needed to secure the victory was for Caiti Gallagher to win her number three singles match, which she did knocking off Carolina Abella 6-2, 6-1. The victory clinched the match and the ISCC title outright for Waubonsee.

The Spartans' Maria Velasco then defeated Liz Towell 6-3, 6-2 at number four singles, and Elgin also won a tight number one doubles match. Oh and Alejandra Abella teammed up to outlast Silva and Gallagher in three sets 2-6, 6-2 and 10-6 in the tie-breaker. The Waubonsee duo of Pruneda and Lauren Karolewicz later held off the tandem of Carolina Abella and Velasco 7-5, 6-3 at number two doubles to end the day's action. Karolewicz and Mary Collum were the recipients of the Elgin forfeits in singles play, while Towell and Collum received the forfeit win in doubles play.
