IVCC nips Chiefs in close match

(Oglesby, IL) - A couple close shots could have and probably would have made all the difference for Waubonsee Community College. The Chiefs and Illinois Valley Community College engaged in a close battle on the Eagles' courts. Eventually the host school escaped with a 5-4 victory in the non-conference match up dropping the Chiefs to 0-3 on the season. The very first singles match of the day went to the three sets before a winner was decided. Illinois Valley's Grace Flipiak narrowly defeated Hailey Wilcox, taking the first set 7-5 before Wilcox won the second set 6-4. Flipiak then won the tie breaker 10-7 which turned out to be very important as the day progressed. The number two singles match was equally as close as Waubonsee's Elizabeth Egerman prevailed in three sets winning 7-6, 3-6 and 10-8 in the tie breaker. The Eagles won both the number three and number five singles matches, while the Chiefs won the number four and number six singles matches. Lauren Weber downed Karlee Arjes 6-4, 6-2 at number four singles with Pauline Schallmo defeating Isabelle Leuck 6-1, 6-4 at number six singles. Wilcox and Egerman then teamed up at number one doubles and pulled out a tough 9-8 victory, taking the tie breaker 10-5. However, Illinois Valley won both the number two and number three doubles matches by identical scores of 8-1 to secure the victory.
