Chiefs, Passett pick up first win

(Aurora, IL) - Waubonsee Community College's women's tennis squad picked up their first win of the 2019 season by downing the College of DuPage 7-2 at Washington Middle School's courts on the west side of Aurora. The victory was also new head coach Douglas Passett's first coaching victory at Waubonsee. The veteran coach and former professional player has also had coaching stints at Catawba (NC) College, Tyler (TX) Junior College and the University of Hawaii. The Chiefs, now 1-2 overall on the season, outlasted a short-handed Chaparral team on an unseasonably hot and humid afternoon.

DuPage took the number one and number two singles matches to get the upper hand early on. The Chaparrals' Rachel Hofstetter defeated Hailey Wilcox 6-2, 6-3 while Alison McKenney downed the Chiefs' Elizabeth Egerman 6-2, 6-2. Waubonsee's Lauren Weber won her number four singles match in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 over Sarai Velazquez to get the Chiefs first win of the day. Valerie Schallmo eventually won a long battle with Merit Allendorfer at number three singles 7-6, 6-3 to even thing up. The Chaparrals then had to default both the number five and number six singles matches. Wilcox and Egerman then clinched the victory by taking their number one doubles match 8-3 over the pairing of Hofstetter and McKenney. Katie Biard teamed up with Pauline Schallmo at number two doubles to also grab an 8-3 win. DuPage also forfeited the number three doubles match to account for the final score.

Waubonsee is in action again this Thursday, September 12 when they host Elgin Community College in their Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference opener. The Chiefs and Spartans are set to take the courts at Washington Middle School at 2:45 p.m.
