Chiefs roll over MVCC in ISCC match

(Palos Hills, IL.) - Waubonsee Community College's Women's Tennis squad rolled over Moraine Valley Community College on Tuesday. The Chiefs swept the Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) match-up 9-0 to improve to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Overall consistent, solid play by coach Douglas Passett's Chiefs led to the convincing victory. Waubonsee's Hailey Wilcox set the tone with a come from behind win at number one singles over Julie Andrist. The sophomore was down 2-4 in the first set before rallying to win 7-6 by taking the tiebreaker 7-5. "She was a little frustrated by her opponent's style of play at the beginning, but she made an adjustment and rallied to win that set, and then finished things off with a 6-2 win in the second set," remarked Passett. From that point the Chiefs never looked back en route to sweeping all nine flights.

Waubonsee's Elizabeth Egerman topped Maddy Stepuszek 6-3, and 6-1 at number two singles. Taylor Wyeth prevailed 6-2, 6-2 at number three singles downing the Cyclones' Trisha Meyers. The Hernandez twins copied each other as they both won their matches in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Jazmine Hernandez blanked Amanda Hess at number four singles, while Angelina Hernandez shut out Nada Hinnawi at number five singles. Lauren Silva then completed the Chiefs' sweep of the singles matches with a 6-3, 6-2 win at number six singles over Moraine's Allie Macelli. In doubles action Wilcox and Egerman teamed up to knock off Andrist and Meyers 7-5, 6-4 at number one doubles. The Hernandez sisters toppled the duo of Stepuszek and Hess 7-5, 6-2 at number two doubles, while the tandem of Wyeth and Silva made it a complete sweep by beating the Hinnawi and Macelli 6-3, 6-0 at number three doubles. "All our players showcased improved serves and consistency, especially off their groundstrokes," said Passett. The Chiefs' delighted coach clearly liked what he saw in his team. "Every match reflected improvement as they adjusted and progressed from the frist to second sets." Waubonsee is in action again on Thursday, October 1 when they host McHenry County College in another ISCC match. Play is set to begin at 2:45 p.m. at the Washington Park courts on the far west side of Aurora.
