(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Day two of the Waubonsee Invitational Volleyball Tournament featured 32 matches on five courts. In the last match of the day the Chiefs and Muskegon (MI.) Community College battled back and forth before the Jayhawks won the match in four games. The Chiefs took the first game 25-20 before Muskegon rallied to win game two 25-22. The Jayhawks used that momentum to steamroll the Chiefs 25-11 in the third contest before holding on for a 25-21 victory in the fourth game to win the match.
In the first game the Chiefs and Jayhawks battled back and forth. Three consecutive serving aces by Kendall Iversen staked Waubonsee to a 17-16 lead. It remained close until Kayla Battle delivered a thundering kill to put the Chiefs up 21-19 and give the hosts some momentum. Waubonsee then finished off a 25-20 triumph when the Jayhawks block, off a kill attempt by Emma King, landed out of bounds.
Game two was tightly contested as well. Neither team was able to secure more than a three-point advantage until the Chiefs took a 19-15 lead on a kill by Natalie Jones. The Chiefs then reeled off the next three points to grab a 22-15 lead. The Jayhawks responded by tallying the next six points to pull within one, prompting a Waubonsee timeout. A frenzied and lengthy volley ensued after the timeout with Muskegon eventually winning the point to tie the score. That energized the Jayhawks who grabbed the next two points to make it 24-22. The Chiefs again called timeout to regroup and took the next point to stay alive. Muskegon then called timeout and moments later won the game on a kill by Julie Brown.
The Jayhawks carried that momentum into the third game where they grabbed an early 6-1 lead. A few minutes later they took a 12-6 lead and upped their advantage to 16-7 as Waubonsee called timeout. Muskegon then pulled ahead 20-7 before finishing off a convincing 25-11 victory.
Game four the Jayhawks again took an early lead before Waubonsee responded to pull ahead 12-11. A kill by Battle and a well-placed return by Jones put the Chiefs in front 15-14. A perfectly timed block by the Jayhawks put them back in front 17-16 moments later. Muskegon then scored three of the next four points to go up 20-17. Waubonsee pulled within one before the Jayhawks won another lengthy volley for a 21-19 advantage. The Chiefs again responded to get within one at 22-21 before a service error put the Jayhawks up by two points again. Muskegon then clinched the win a minute later on a service ace down the left side line dropping just in front of the Chiefs' bench.
King finished with 11 kills and 12 digs to help lead the way for Waubonsee. Jones booked 29 assists and made 15 digs, while Maizy Larson chipped in with 16 digs. Iversen tallied four aces and had 17 digs, with Battle and Anna Friedlund each recorded a pair of solo blocks.
