Chiefs put away Owls, win ISCC opener

(Sugar Grove, IL.) - Waubonsee Community College began Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference play with a three-game sweep of visiting Oakton Community College. The Chiefs (7-4, 1-0) edged the Owls 26-24 in the first game, before holding off Oakton for a 25-20 victory in game two. Waubonsee then pulled away in the third game to win 25-16 and take the match.

Game one was a tight battle throughout before the Chiefs pulled out the slim victory. In game two Waubonsee pulled away midway through to grab a commanding 17-7 lead. An ace by Anna Friedlund, a kill by Kayla Battle and a nifty touch shot for a point by Maizy Larson sparked the Chiefs' surge. Moments later Natalie Jones made an incredible diving save which Battle then converted into another emphatic kill, prompting an Oakton (3-5, 1-1) timeout. The Owls regrouped and eventually pulled to within three at 21-18, but Waubonsee held them off to go up two games to none.

The third game the Chiefs were in control from the outset. A kill by Friedlund, two more kills in a row by Larson, a block by Battle and a spike by Sidney Fedor staked Waubonsee to a 17-10 lead. After an Oakton timeout the Owls fought back to within four at 19-15. But once again the Chiefs responded as Emma King registered a big kill, followed by another by Fedor to put Waubonsee back up by seven points. King then finished off the Chiefs' seventh win of the season with a resounding spike on match point.

Battle led the way with nine kills, while Larson, Fedor and King each booked seven kills. Jones contributed 23 assists and nine digs, Friedlund recorded three serving aces and Kendall Iversen chipped in with 11 digs.
