Chiefs overwhelm Spartans' Junior Varsity

(Sugar Grove, IL.) – Waubonsee Community College downed Aurora University's Junior Varsity in four games. The Chiefs, 8-4 overall on the season, overwhelmed the inexperienced Spartans competing in their first match of the year.  Waubonsee took early leads in each game as the Spartans struggled to get on track.

Maizy Larson got the Chiefs off to a good start with a kill down the right side line to open the scoring. Waubonsee grabbed an early 7-3 lead and extended it to 12-5 on another kill by Larson. Moments later Sidney Fedor tallied a spike to put the Chiefs in control at 15-7.  Waubonsee then proceeded to reel off 10 straight points capped off by a service ace by Kendall Iversen to win game one 25-9.

The Chiefs carried that momentum into the second game and raced out to a 10-2 lead before the Spartans called timeout. When play resumed Waubonsee ran off three more points with Fedor registering a power kill and Kayla Battle scoring off a solo block. Aurora finally started to get on track offensively scoring seven of the next nine points. Four miscues by the Chiefs got the Spartans within 18-15. However, a kill by Emma King put Waubonsee in front 21-15 forcing another Aurora timeout. The Chiefs then held on for a 25-19 victory to go up two games to none.

Waubonsee jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in game three highlighted by an ace by Natalie Jones and a pair of kills by Larson. A few minutes later the Chiefs pulled ahead 10-3 before Aurora responded with four straight points. The Spartans then clawed their way back to tie it at 12 on a block by Asja Singleton. A moment later an ace by Nicole Zowaski gave the Spartans their first lead. A resounding kill by King put Waubonsee back in front momentarily at 15-14. A back and forth battle commenced with the score tied each step of the way up to 24-all.  The Spartans then won the game 26-24 when a block attempt by Battle ricocheted out of bounds.

In game four the Chiefs again took an early 7-2 lead before extending it to 15-7. An ace by Iversen put Waubonsee ahead 17-8 as Aurora called timeout. The Spartans then got within five points at 20-15 on an ace by Abbey Lieser. Moments later Aurora trimmed the deficit to 21-18 before King tallied a spike for Waubonsee. A minute later the Chiefs won the game and the match when a Spartans' block went out of bounds for a 25-20 Waubonsee victory.

Fedor led Waubonsee with 16 kills, while Battle added nine kills and three blocks, and Jones registered 39 assists, 19 digs and five aces. King added 14 kills and Iversen chipped in with 29 digs in the winning cause.
