Chiefs overwhelm PSC to win home opener

(Sugar Grove, IL) - Once Waubonsee Community College's volleyball team got on track, there was no stopping them. The Chiefs (3-2, 1-0) steamed past Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) foe Prairie State College in three straight games to win their 2019 conference and home opener. With the victory the Chiefs have now gone 44-11 in ISCC play since head coach Steve Kish took over the program in 2012.

In the first game things were close early on as the Pioneers (2-3, 0-1) tied the score at 6-all before the Chiefs began to build some momentum. Waubonsee gradually pulled away to stake a 24-16 lead. Freshman Rebecca Robinson then finished it off with a kill moments later as the Chiefs took game one 25-17. Waubonsee kept rolling along in game two by racing out to an 11-4 lead as the Chiefs' began to click on offense. Kish's crew built their advantage to 18-9 and then grabbed a 22-11 lead on a serving ace by sophomore Riane Tomsa. Not much later the Chiefs secured a 25-12 victory and continued to pour it on in game three. An ace by Sydney Fedderly made it 6-2 and moments later Waubonsee went ahead 8-3 on an ace by Larkin O'Donnell. Alyssa Gittins added another ace, her fourth of the night and the Chiefs' 15th for the match as they grabbed a commanding 17-6 lead. A Waubonsee block then made it 21-8 before Maddie Mueller eventually sent the Pioneers back out on the trail with a booming kill through the middle of the court to clinch game three 25-11.

For the match Waubonsee tallied 33 kills with five different players recording five or more kills each. Robinson finished with six kills, 17 assists, nine digs and three aces to lead the way. Sydney Coultrip also had six kills and contributed 10 assists. Mueller chipped in with eight digs and Tomsa has seven digs as Waubonsee recorded 46 digs on the night. Seven different Chiefs registered at least one serving ace.
