Chiefs Win Nail-Biter Over Sandburg

(Sugar Grove, IL) - Waubonsee Community College continued to roll along in the Region IV Crossover Volleyball Tournament. The host Chiefs (14-4) scored a thrilling five-set victory over Carl Sandburg College (9-4) to extend their winning streak to eight. The Chargers, ranked 20th nationally in the NJCAA Division II Pre-season poll, started out sharp and took the first set 25-16. Waubonsee then edged Sandburg in games two and three by identical 25-23 scores. The Chargers then forced a fifth and final set by taking the fourth game 25-20. Waubonsee grabbed a 13-11 lead before the Chargers tallied the next two points to tie it. After a Chiefs' timeout the teams traded points to remain tied at 14-all. A moment later a kill shot by Waubonsee's Anna Friedlund was tipped by a Chargers player and sailed out of bounds setting up match point for the Chiefs. On the ensuing volley the Chargers kill attempt landed beyond the end line giving Waubonsee the slim victory.

Waubonsee finished with five players in double digits for kills. Sydni Coultrip led the way with 15 kills, 27 assists and 11 digs. Sydney Fedderly also booked 15 kills to go along with 26 digs. Rebecca Robinson added 11 kills, 31 assists and two solo blocks. Alyssa Gittins chipped in with 10 kills and four solo blocks, while Friedlund contributed 10 kills and Lydia Sabanish registered 24 digs. Waubonsee plays Kishwaukee College in their final match of the 12-team, three-day tournament later this afternoon. After today the Chiefs, winners of 10 out of their last 11 matches, are set to travel to Elgin Community College to take on the Spartans in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference (ISCC) battle on Wednesday, September 18 starting at 6:00 p.m. Coach Steve Kish's crew is scheduled to play next weekend at Kansas City-Kansas Community College's tournament. The Chiefs will take on fourth-ranked Highland (KS) Community College and the host school KCKCC, ranked 20th nationally, on September 20. Waubonsee will also play Northeast (NE) Community College and Neosho County (KS) College the following day. The Chiefs do not return home until Wednesday, September 25 when they host the College of Lake County in an ISCC match-up beginning at 6:00 p.m.
