Chiefs topple Lancers in ISCC play

(Sugar Grove, IL) – Waubonsee Community College's women's volleyball team took control early and never looked back in downing the College of Lake County in an Illinois Skyway Collegiate Conference match on Wednesday evening. Head Coach Steve Kish's Chiefs (2-5, 2-1) topped the Lancers (1-2, 1-2) by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-17 in Waubonsee's Field House. Kish, who led the Chiefs' program for 10 seasons, spent the last two at Lake County before recently returning to lead Waubonsee's program once more.

Behind the serving of Madison Marziani-Radomski and a pair of kills by Tauja Crump Waubonsee jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the opening set. The Chiefs then reeled off five straight points sparked by the serving of Athena Westphal to grab a 16-5 lead. A power kill by Taylor Greer-Ahmed and a service ace by Joselyn Roche helped Waubonsee maintain a double-digit lead before the Lancers tallied six straight points to get within 19-15. Lake County still trailed by four points at 22-18 when a net violation and return error by the Lancers got the Chiefs to game point. A kill by Ily Hunt from the right side then finished off the game.

Game two started with an ace by Roche and a kill by Crump as Waubonsee took an early 3-1 lead. The Lancers responded by taking the next five points of the next six points to surge ahead 6-4. A big solo block by Lake County's Madison Schippel helped the visitors extend their lead to 10-6. Waubonsee clawed its way back to within a point at 16-15 on a kill by Crump to as Lancers' head coach Sam Choy called timeout. The momentum continued to swing in Waubonsee's favor as Kish's crew pulled ahead 18-17. A block by Greer-Ahmed along with a trio of hitting errors by Lake County helped the Chiefs take a 22-17 lead. When play resumed after another Lancers' timeout the teams split the next four points setting up game point. A long volley ended when Hunt and Greer-Ahmed teamed up again for another tandem block to end the game.

Crump got Waubonsee on the board first again in game three with a kill from the middle of the net. A thunderous kill by Makayla McNally and another kill by Crump made it 3-1 in the early going. Minutes later a service error and return error helped Lake County pull even at 7-all. The game went back and forth with the Chiefs knotting the score at 10 on a block by Bella Klotz. A kill by Crump then put Waubonsee in front 12-11. However, a pair of aces by Schippel staked Lake County to a 14-12 lead. Highlighted by a monster kill by Westphal from the left side, the Chiefs tallied the next seven points to surge ahead 20-16. Moments later a great dig by Ella Smykel kept the ball alive and led to another Waubonsee point as the Chiefs extended their lead to 22-16. Claudia Johnson followed with two straight service aces to make it match for Waubonsee. A hitting error by the Lancers ended the game and the match with the Chiefs booking 11 of the final 12 points scored.

Roche ended the game with 10 assists and three aces, while Johnson had a dozen assists and three aces as well. Crump registered seven kills, Marziani-Radomski finished with 14 digs and Smykel was credited with a dozen digs. Hunt tallied seven kills and was a part of three blocks, and Greer-Ahmed was in on four blocks for Waubonsee. The Chiefs' next match is tomorrow, Wednesday, September 12 when they host the College of DuPage with a 6:00 p.m. start in Waubonsee's Field House.
